Shinichirō Watanabe’s Lazarus Reveals Poster Ahead of 2025 Release

As a lifelong anime enthusiast who has been enchanted by the captivating world of Shinichirō Watanabe for over two decades now, I can say with utmost certainty that the upcoming series, “Lazarus,” is shaping up to be another masterpiece from this genius storyteller. From “Cowboy Bebop” to “Samurai Champloo,” Watanabe’s ability to blend music, culture, and thought-provoking narratives has never ceased to amaze me.

Renowned for his unique blend of music and anime, Shinichirō Watanabe returns with his latest production titled “Lazarus“. Fans are now privy to a sneak peek of this upcoming science fiction series. Known for his innovative single-season anime creations, Watanabe has previously whisked us away to the cosmos accompanied by jazz in “Cowboy Bebop“, transported us back in time with a hip-hop twist in “Samurai Champloo“, and left us grooving in space with “Space Dandy“. As we anxiously anticipate the release of “Lazarus” in 2025, a promotional poster and the artists behind the opening and closing themes have been revealed.

Lazarus brings Shinichirō Watanabe back into the realm of science fiction. In the year 2052, an emergency team is gathered when a miraculous remedy is stolen for mass depopulation purposes. The official summary states: “A task force is assembled when a miracle cure is hijacked for the purpose of purging populations.” Already, fans have been given a sneak peek with a teaser trailer and a first-look clip. The latest poster hints at the enigmatic “miracle cure,” showing various hands either reaching towards it or perishing because of it. Take a look at the poster below:

Lazarus‘s Soundtrack Features Great Musicians

As amazing as Shinichirō Watanabe’s original stories are, they’d be nothing without their incredible soundtracks. Watanabe assembled the now-renowned jazz group SEATBELTS for Cowboy Bebop and collaborated with the late-great Japanese music producer Nujabes for Samurai Champloo. While the full soundtrack for Lazarus hasn’t been revealed yet, we now know who will be singing the opening and closing tracks.

To start off, the first track “Vortex” will be played by Kamasi Washington. He’s an American saxophonist who has collaborated with Thundercat, Snoop Dogg, and Raphael Saadiq. The final piece, titled “Lazarus,” is set to be performed by the British rock band, The Boo Radleys. This group previously released a track called “Lazarus” back in 1993. It remains undecided if the new performance will be a fresh composition or a reinterpretation of their classic hit.

Shinichirō Watanabe Worked with a John Wick Legend on Lazarus

Shinichirō Watanabe collaborated with an impressive roster of talents for the project “Lazarus“. Apart from Kamasi Washington and The Boo Radleys, he also partnered with Studio MAPPA, a highly sought-after animation studio. To make the action sequences more dynamic, the director of “John Wick“, Chad Stahelski, generously provided his expertise as a fight coordinator. He filmed the combat scenes in real life and then supplied these clips as references for the animators to emulate.

Lazarus’ official launch date hasn’t been set yet, but you can expect to see it on Adult Swim in 2025. A fresh poster reveal hints that we might get a new trailer soon, possibly with a confirmed release date included.
