Shock Annouacement: Fan-Favorite HBO Series Comes to a Hasty End This Year

On Thursday, supporters of “The Righteous Gemstones” received mixed feelings as HBO declared that Season 4 would mark the end of the show’s run, yet also announced its return in March. Fans are thrilled about the quick comeback of this musical drama, but they’re understandably disappointed at the series finale approaching. It’s been almost two years since Season 3 of the Gemstone family tale, and as of now, the specific date for the final season premiere remains undisclosed. Danny McBride, the series star and creator, shared his thoughts about the ending with Variety, hinting that he is ready to wrap up this project.

McBride stated that he was told it’s time to bring the story to a conclusion, much like how the narrative this season has perfectly rounded out the themes, concepts, and characters within “The Righteous Gemstones.” He expressed his delight for having spent eight years working with this team, and hinted at some thrilling resolutions, surprises, and plot twists that will unfold throughout the exciting final season.

The show, titled The Righteous Gemstones, centers around a family who are televangelists and megachurch pastors. This clan includes their patriarch Dr. Eli Gemstone (played by John Goodman), his eldest son Jesse (portrayed by McBride), youngest son Kelvin (Adam Devine), daughter Judy (Edi Patterson), and Jesse’s wife Amber (Cassidy Freeman). This series initially aired in 2019, and while it has enjoyed significant success, it has also sparked some controversy.

According to the official summary, Season 4 is expected to conclude the most significant family and church-related plots. In simpler terms, the storyline reveals that when the Gemstone siblings finally seize control of the Church, they find out that leading isn’t as easy as they thought, and their lavish lifestyle comes with unexpected consequences.

Initially, McBride expressed his desire for the Gemstones series to be his longest project. During a 2019 interview with Polygon, he likened it to an epic saga like “The Thorn Birds,” indicating that we’ll get to know many members of the family, including cousins and great uncles. In McBride’s view, this season serves as chapter one, laying the groundwork for the characters and events to come.

It seems McBride managed to pack a multitude of thoughts and characters within the show, even as we eagerly await its fourth season in March on HBO. In case you missed the earlier seasons, they are currently available for streaming on Max.
