Warning: Contains SPOILERS for the Chicago P.D. season 12 finale.
On Wednesday, May 21st, I tuned in for the finale of NBC’s gripping series, “Chicago P.D.” – marking the conclusion of the final “One Chicago” night this broadcast season. The episode took an unexpected turn when Shawn Hatosy’s character, Reid, was fatally shot. However, the real shocker unfolded as Detective Chapman uncovered evidence suggesting that Voight had ordered his death. In a chilling confrontation, Voight warned Chapman that he’d reached the end of the line, hinting at potential ramifications for their budding relationship.
In a more optimistic twist, “Vows” wraps up with Burgess and Ruzek tying the knot following years of romantic uncertainty. The series ends with them standing at the altar, and showrunner Gwen Sigan assures us that the wedding indeed takes place. As for whether viewers will witness the entire ceremony, that decision lies ahead when the team reconvenes to pen Chicago P.D. season 13.
I had a chat with Sigan regarding Reid’s passing, the current state of Voight’s bond with Chapman, and future implications since Burzek has tied the knot.
Sigan Debated Keeping Reid Alive In Chicago P.D.
“It just felt like this is what it was all leading to. But we did think about it, because we like the actor so much as well.”
ScreenRant: Reid was unfortunately killed off, yet Shawn Hatosy’s acting skills are remarkable. Did you ever find yourself thinking, “Perhaps we could have kept him in the storyline?
Gwen Sigan: Indeed. Initially, we never imagined finding a way to lighten his character or make it less grim. However, we eventually reached a stage where we pondered, “Are we truly going to eliminate him? We don’t wish to do that. How can we bring him back?
“He makes an excellent foil for Voight, and his acting skills are top-notch – truly professional and dependable. We pondered over it extensively; finding the ideal match wasn’t easy. However, it seemed like this was the direction our plans were pointing towards. Yet, we didn’t rush into a decision because we admire him as an actor so much.
This revelation suggests a significant strain or even an end to Chapman and Voight’s relationship due to the breach of trust, as Voight approved Chapman’s actions that led to Reid’s demise.
Gwen Sigan: That final scene feels more like a breakup than something good. It’s certainly messy and unclear. To me, it doesn’t seem conclusive. However, I don’t think everything is over between them, but he’s establishing boundaries. Essentially, he’s saying, “I can’t do this anymore. I don’t have the capacity.
He implies, “I can’t have more,” but I perceive it as, “I don’t know how to proceed or if I can do it.” In that instant, Chapman catches the implication, comprehends it, and it feels like the dissolution of something that never truly reached its potential in the first place. It never really became what she had hoped for at some point.
Chicago P.D. Season 13 May Jump Forward In Time
“They’re married, so we could either see it or we can jump to the future and see them happily married and see what they’re up to.”
As Reid is about to pass away, he tells Voight, “You’re more corrupt than I am.” Will Voight ponder this statement deeply in the future?
Gwen Sigan: Voight strikes me as unique because I believe his thought processes deviate from typical human behavior. In that instant, it seemed like he easily set aside the issue, but it’s a detail that may linger in his mind somewhat. And over time, we’ve noticed him growing more introspective, even if he tries to deny it.
As a movie enthusiast, reflecting on the previous season, I can’t help but sense a profound introspection in his character. It feels like he’s been grappling with the question, “What else is there for me in life?” and it seems he’s almost retreated from his usual trajectory. I believe these thoughts will linger in his mind, consciously or subconsciously, regardless of how far he progresses.
Wondering if the following scene change means a time leap ahead or if we continue from where we last saw Burgess and Ruzek at the altar in the next episode?
Gwen Sigan: You recall that we haven’t returned to the room yet? That being said, all those scenarios seem plausible. To me, the wedding has already taken place; they are now husband and wife. We could either revisit the wedding or leap forward in time to catch a glimpse of their happy married life and what they’re currently engaged in. Essentially, we have multiple paths to choose from.
What picture do you envision of their relationship progression, considering the long span of will-they-won’t-they?
As a dedicated cinephile, I can hardly contain my excitement! The potential for portraying a married couple on screen is endless, offering numerous intriguing angles to showcase their unique bond. Here’s hoping we delve deep into this relationship and unravel its complexities, revealing the true essence of matrimony.
