Recently, fresh details have emerged about the unexpected deaths of renowned actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who were found in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday. The authorities have since disclosed that it appears the couple might have been deceased for a while before they were discovered, and they’ve dismissed any immediate environmental threats as the cause of death.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza of Santa Fe County stated that deputies performed a wellness visit at the house, discovering Hackman, 95, in a mudroom near the kitchen and Arakawa, 64, in a bathroom beside a space heater. A bottle containing pills was found nearby Arakawa on the countertop. The couple’s dog was found dead in its kennel. Upon examination, it appeared that Arakawa’s body had undergone decomposition, with bloating on her face and evidence of mummification on her hands and feet.
According to Sheriff Mendoza, following their preliminary investigation, authorities requested a warrant to carry out a more detailed examination. The New Mexico Gas Company and the local fire department were then called upon to check for any signs of harmful gases or gas leaks; however, no such issues were found. The results of their analysis eliminated carbon monoxide exposure as a potential cause of the couple’s deaths.
Authorities Investigating Time and Circumstances of Passing
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself intrigued by the circumstances surrounding Hackman and Arakawa, which were deemed “suspicious enough” to warrant a comprehensive search and investigation. However, it’s important to note that neither of them showed any signs of forced entry or visible external injuries from a preliminary examination.
Mendoza mentioned that the team is looking at several scenarios, such as natural occurrences, unintended incidents, or various health-related issues. Moreover, he verified that it appears Hackman and Arakawa might have been already dead for quite some time prior to being found.
Initially, two upkeep personnel apparently spotted an open front entrance, which led them to investigate further. They turned out to be the ones who discovered the couple initially, followed by notifying the relevant authorities. Upon entering the residence, they also stumbled upon two dogs that were still breathing – one dog was in the bathroom with Arakawa and another was found outside the house.
A post-mortem examination has been arranged, and we’re waiting for the results of a toxicology test to establish the exact reason for the death.
