In the recently released edition of ‘Ultimate Wolverine’, it’s been disclosed that three extraordinary mutants, namely Winter Soldier (Logan), Gambit, and Kitty Pryde, are at an Omega-level. However, a skirmish between Logan and his fellow X-Men members, Gambit and Kitty Pryde, has left Logan in a vulnerable state. This is troubling news for Wolverine’s associates, Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red. As it stands, Wolverine has been manipulated to serve as the Winter Soldier under the Eurasian Republic, a role he fulfills as an assassin targeting mutants who oppose the Maker’s malevolent council. The latest issue of ‘Ultimate Wolverine’ delves into the lives of various X-Men in the Ultimate Universe, but the revelations about these three Omega-level mutants are particularly grim. Caution: Spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #4 follow.
Issue #4 of “Ultimate Wolverine” originates from the creative minds of Chris Condon, Alessandro Cappuccio, Bryan Valenza, and VC’s Cory Petit. The narrative primarily focuses on a battle between a wolf and a bear in a frosty woodland, interspersed with dialogues depicting guards and scientists attempting to restrain Wolverine. Despite being administered enough sedatives to subdue a colossus, the Winter Soldier persists in his pursuit. In the end, he massacres a group of soldiers and researchers, finding respite only when Dr. Prostovich, Directorate X’s Research Head, appears.
Dr. Prostovich commands a guard to shackle Wolverine’s wrists, leading him beneath the Kremlin to the Cerebellum where they hold a prisoner. Her intention is to regain dominance over Ultimate Wolverine by subjecting him to someone confined within the Cerebellum. The Directorate X employs sedatives, re-education, manipulation, and telepathy to control the Winter Soldier. “One dam gives way, another remains,” she remarks.
Dr. Prostovich asks a guard to handcuff Wolverine and take him to a secret place in the Kremlin called the Cerebellum where they keep someone captive. She wants to reclaim control over Ultimate Wolverine by showing him this person. The organization known as Directorate X uses drugs, training, deceit, and mind-reading techniques to manage the Winter Soldier. “One wall crumbles, another stays strong,” she says.
Since the connection to manipulate Winter Soldier is severed, Doctor Prostovich resorts to utilizing “the Phoenix subject” as a means to mend his fractured psyche. This is where Jean Grey is found, suspended within the immense Cerebro complex, floating beneath a brain that turns out to be Professor Charles Xavier’s, the founder of the X-Men.
Marvel Reveals the Status of Ultimate Charles Xavier, Ultimate Magneto, and Ultimate Jean Grey
In the closing pages of issue #4 of Ultimate Wolverine, we find an entry in Dr. Prostovich’s records. This log includes details about Cerebellum, Charles Xavier, and Phoenix (Jean Grey). However, it also reveals the fate of Magneto in the Ultimate Universe. It transpires that Xavier perished as a captive of Directorate X, with his corpse stored in a freezer beneath the Kremlin. Interestingly, Magneto is referred to as a “specimen” by Dr. Prostovich, who suggests that Magneto and Xavier together possessed the ability to command the world. Consequently, they were categorized as “Omega level” mutants.
In the Ultimate Universe, Jean Grey is believed to be the last Omega-level mutant. She’s being manipulated by the Eurasian Republic for military purposes. Notably, Professor Xavier’s brain, now existing independently, hovers above Jean. This isn’t a typical scenario, as Jean is kept in a constant state of sedation due to her extraordinary powers and potential alien influence, specifically the Phoenix Force. The purpose of Xavier’s brain is twofold: to calm, guide, and intensify the abilities of the Phoenix entity within Jean through controlled electrical signals. Essentially, the Directorate X has control over Jean Grey, who in turn controls mutants like Ultimate Wolverine. Additionally, the Cerebellum device enhances these powers even further.
In the Directorate X context, Jean Grey has proven to be most effective at managing Wolverine, soothing him in a manner reminiscent of their bond from the core Marvel Universe storylines. While this detail might be unfamiliar to many, devotees of the X-Men series are well aware of the deep connection between Jean Grey and Wolverine.
In this current scenario, it seems both the Ultimate Universe counterparts of Charles Xavier and Magneto have met their apparent demise, with Jean Grey currently manipulating Wolverine. Regrettably, the X-Men’s strongest Omega-level mutants are either deceased or being exploited as tools by the villains. It’s a disheartening turn of events for the X-Men.
