Shocking Reasons Luke and June Split in The Handmaid’s Tale Finale!

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Handmaid’s Tale series finale & The Testaments!

In the climactic finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale” series, June and Luke choose to part ways, a decision that leaves viewers stunned. The love triangle between June, Nick, and Luke has been a central plotline throughout the show, with June’s choice remaining uncertain. However, when Nick met his end in season 6, episode 9, it appeared that June and Luke’s bond had become unbreakable. Regrettably, this was not the case, as they decided to go their separate paths at the end of the series.

In the finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale” series, we see less a dramatic climax and more a continuation or epilogue, focusing on June and other characters as they work to rebuild after events. Notably, Boston has been recaptured following June’s attack on Serena Joy’s wedding, representing a significant win for the U.S. However, the fight against Gilead and efforts to rescue Hannah are far from over, leaving much work to be done. Consequently, the series ends with June bidding farewell to many characters, including Luke, which unfortunately is a poignant parting.

Luke & June Have Their Own Battles To Fight

Meaning That It Is Best That They Split Up

In the final episode of The Handmaid’s Tale series, June and Luke engage in a heartfelt dialogue about their future strategies against Gilead. June is primarily concerned with locating Hannah, while her other tactical moves are merely steps towards this goal. On the other hand, Luke has been collaborating with Mayday for so long that his focus has shifted to rescuing all those trapped in Gilead. Since becoming a key member of Mayday, Luke aspires to keep fighting alongside them, even after liberating Boston.

Due to their contrasting methods, Luke and June acknowledge that they have individual struggles to tackle, and remaining together would result in discord. Despite their affection for each other and belief in a future reunion, they are uncertain about when Gilead will fall. For now, they prefer to concentrate on achieving that objective, keeping their hope alive for another chance with Hannah.

The intriguing aspect of June and Luke separating stems from their once fiery affection for one another fading due to their ongoing battle against Gilead. In the beginning, June’s objective was reuniting with Luke, while Luke sought to rescue June. They accomplished this objective some seasons back, which led them to pursue more significant tasks such as dismantling Gilead. With both of them often finding themselves in perilous situations, their love for each other became a potential vulnerability. They have postponed expressing their feelings until the fall of Gilead is secured.

Will Luke & June Reunite In The Testaments

It Would Only Make Sense

Despite Luke and June being separated at the conclusion of “The Testaments,” there remains hope for a future reunion between them. Excitingly, Hulu has revealed plans to adapt Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel sequel, “The Testaments,” into a series, implying that the tale from “The Handmaid’s Tale” will persist. While June takes a back seat as the central character in the book, she makes an appearance at the end, reconnecting with her two daughters after more than 15 years.

In the final chapter of “The Testaments”, Luke is not explicitly featured, suggesting he might not make an appearance. Nevertheless, it seems logical for him to be included, as a fitting emotional resolution for June requires closure for Luke too. Both characters shared the common objective of rescuing Hannah and reunion between them would provide an emotional twist, hinting at their reconciliation after their separation in “The Handmaid’s Tale”.
