Let’s discuss the fate of the four actors who were excluded from the cast of Star Trek: Picard season 3, along with their characters. In the debut of season 1, Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was joined by a fresh team of companions, most of whom weren’t part of Starfleet. Among these new acquaintances were Soji (Isa Briones), Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), Elnor (Evan Evagora), and Captain Cristobal Rios (Santiago Cabrera). For the record, all four actors had reprised their roles in season 2 of Star Trek: Picard.
When Terry Matalas stepped in as the showrunner for Star Trek: Picard season 3, his aim was to bring back the cast from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Regrettably, the budget of Picard season 3 wasn’t sufficient to accommodate the return of TNG veterans, the new characters Matalas introduced such as Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) and Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), along with all the actors from Star Trek: Picard. While Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd continued in their roles as Seven of Nine and Raffi Musiker respectively, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, Evan Evagora, and Alison Pill were absent due to budget constraints, a situation Matalas referred to as “disappointing.
Picard” was the most successful and critically-acclaimed among Patrick Stewart’s series, but it was unfortunate that not all characters from “Picard” got to enjoy this success in the final season. Previously, “Star Trek: Picard” season 2 had written out the characters absent in “Picard” season 3, freeing up the actors for new roles. Many of the original cast members from “Picard” have found success in other movies and TV shows, and there’s hope that they might return if “Star Trek: Picard’s” proposed continuation, “Star Trek: Legacy”, comes to fruition.
4. Isa Briones
Briones Played Soji & Multiple Roles In Star Trek: Picard Seasons 1 & 2
After leaving Star Trek: Picard, Isa Briones made a strong comeback. Known for her stage performances, including her role in Hamilton, she landed the part of Euridyce in Hadestown on Broadway. Moreover, Isa played Margot in Disney+/Hulu’s revival of Goosebumps. Following this, she was cast as Dr. Trinity Santos in Max’s medical drama, The Pitt, which boosted her visibility within the popular streaming series. It is anticipated that Isa will reappear in The Pitt during its second season.
In seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Picard, Isa Briones showcased her versatility by embodying several characters. She played Dahj and Soji, synthetic twins, as well as their menacing counterpart, Sutra, during season 1. For the premiere of season 2, she reprised her role as Soji, but later in the series, she appeared as a different character named Kore Soong. At the end of Star Trek: Picard season 2, Kore was enlisted by Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) into the Travelers.
Since the lifespan of synthetic character Soji is indeterminate, while Kore Soong transcends space and time, there’s a good chance that actress Isa Briones could reprise her role in “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” set in the post-“Star Trek: Discovery” 32nd century. Here’s hoping that Soji might encounter her ‘father,’ Data (portrayed by Brent Spiner), in “Star Trek: Legacy,” as Data has been reintroduced in “Star Trek: Picard” season 3.
3. Santiago Cabrera
Cabrera Played Captain Cristobal Rios In Star Trek: Picard Season 1 & 2
Prior to his role as Captain Cristobal Rios in Star Trek: Picard, Santiago Cabrera had already made a name for himself with performances in shows like Heroes, Merlin, and Big Little Lies. Post his departure from Picard, Santiago continued to deliver standout roles, including those in The Flight Attendant season 2, where he played a significant part, and as Jorge Sanchez in Fox’s The Cleaning Lady. Furthermore, Cabrera made a brief appearance as Richard, the deceased father of Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega), in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
It appears that Captain Cristobal Rios’ departure from Star Trek: Picard seems final for now. At the conclusion of season 2, he chose to stay in the 21st century with Dr. Teresa Ramirez (Sol Rodriguez). Later on, Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) shared news about Rios’ demise. However, given the potential for time travel and timeline modifications within Star Trek, there’s always a possibility that Cristobal Rios, played by Santiago Cabrera, could return.
2. Evan Evagora
Evagora Played Elnor In Star Trek: Picard Seasons 1 & 2
Following his role in “Star Trek: Picard,” Evan Evagora hasn’t secured a prominent TV or film position yet. His most significant part prior to “Picard” was playing Nick Taylor in the reboot of Blumhouse’s “Fantasy Island.” After embodying Elnor, a member of the Qowat Milat and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard’s young Romulan protege, Evagora provided the voice and motion capture for Nick Furcillo in the video game “The Quarry.
In the second season of “Star Trek: Picard,” Elnor, a full-blooded Romulan, joined Starfleet and was stationed on the USS Excelsior. Tragically, he met his end, only to be brought back to life by Q (John de Lancie). After the USS Excelsior was swallowed by the Borg in season 3 and subsequently destroyed, it seemed uncertain whether Elnor would reappear. However, the showrunner Terry Matalas hinted at a possible future return for the young Romulan, as he wasn’t on board the starship when it was lost.
1. Alison Pill
Pill Played Dr. Agnes Jurati In Star Trek: Picard Seasons 1 & 2
Prior to her appearance as Dr. Agnes Jurati in “Star Trek: Picard,” Alison Pill had already made a name for herself in films like “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “The Newsroom.” Following her departure from “Picard,” Pill has since taken on new roles, including those in AppleTV+’s “Hello Tomorrow!”, voicing Kim Pine in “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” and starring in a Broadway production of “Uncle Vanya.” One of her most memorable performances was playing Rachel, the wife of serial killer Cooper (portrayed by Josh Hartnett), in M. Night Shyamalan’s film “Trap.
The outcome of Dr. Agnes Jurati following Star Trek: Picard season 2 remains a major point of speculation. In the final episodes of the second season, Jurati combined with the Borg Queen (Annie Wersching) from an ominous alternate Confederation reality. This hybrid Borg Queen then established a more benevolent Borg Collective. At the end of Star Trek: Picard season 2, Jurati’s Borg Queen shielded the United Federation of Planets against an unidentified new adversary. Regrettably, Star Trek: Picard season 3 did not continue the story of Agnes Jurati’s Borg Queen.
In Star Trek: Picard, Patrick Stewart’s initial desire was for Jean-Luc Picard’s story not to revisit the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, his opinion shifted, leading to the highly praised and well-received season of Star Trek: Picard. As for Isa Briones, Alison Pill, Evan Evagora, and Santiago Cabrera’s characters, the world of Star Trek is full of possibilities. Should a way be found to reintroduce Soji, Jurati, Rios, and Elnor, they would undoubtedly be well-received.
