Shocking Recast Revealed for Malcolm in the Middle’s Disney+ Revival!

In a surprising twist, Disney+’s upcoming revival of “Malcolm in the Middle” has chosen to recast the character of Dewey, who was originally played by Erik Per Sullivan on the Fox sitcom that ran from 2000 to 2006 over 151 episodes. The youngest sibling among Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), Reese (Justin Berfield), and Francis (Christopher Masterson) until baby brother Jamie arrived in the fourth season, will now be brought to life by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Ellsworth-Clark, known for his roles in “The Expanse” and “Fargo,” is stepping into the series along with the returning Berfield and Masterson. Previously, it was announced that Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek would reprise their roles as Hal and Lois, parents of our characters, alongside Muniz in the lead role. This exciting news was confirmed back in December.

In a fresh take on the beloved series “Malcolm in the Middle,” the four-episode revival has cast Anthony Timpano from “Riverdale” as the mature Jamie, while Vaughan Murrae from “The Solutioneers” steps into the role of Malcolm’s youngest sibling, Kelly. Notably, Lois was seen pregnant with her sixth child in the 2006 series finale, when Malcolm was accepted into Harvard. Interestingly, Murrae identifies as non-binary, mirroring the character of Kelly, who is portrayed as independent, academically gifted, and already demonstrating wisdom beyond their years, surpassing much of the family’s understanding.

Furthermore, Keeley Karsten (from The Fabelmans) has been chosen to portray the character Leah, who is Malcolm’s daughter. She shares with him a similar dry wit, impulsiveness, and extraordinary intelligence, but she is more tender-hearted and emotional compared to him. Previously, Kiana Madeira (known for the Fear Street trilogy) was announced as Malcolm’s romantic interest, Tristan.

The story revolves around Malcolm and his daughter, as they find themselves entangled in a whirlwind of family events when Hal and Lois insist on Malcolm attending their 40th wedding anniversary celebration.

Since the 2010 movie “Twelve,” directed by Joel Schumacher, former child actor Sullivan has stepped away from the screen. In an interview in 2024, Kaczmarek disclosed that Sullivan chose to leave acting behind to focus on academic studies instead.

He’s doing quite well, exceptionally well… He played Malcolm for seven years, starting at age 7 and ending at 14. Acting wasn’t something he was particularly interested in, to put it mildly,” Kaczmarek shared with the fan site Malcolm France. “He attends a highly respected American university where we’ve all been asked to keep mum about his identity. He has a deep affection for Charles Dickens and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Victorian literature. I respect it because many people believe that being in show business is the pinnacle, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer steps back into his writing and executive producer roles for the revival, produced by Disney Branded Television, 20th Television, and New Regency – the same companies behind the original Fox sitcom. Ken Kwapis, a seasoned TV director with credits including episodes of The Office, Freaks and Geeks, Parks and Recreation, Space Force, and the initial Malcolm series, is also joining as executive producer and will direct all four episodes.

In collaboration with Tracy Katsky from KatCo, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, Natalie Lehmann, and others, Cranston is overseeing the production of this limited series for New Regency. Former Malcolm in the Middle producer Jimmy Simons and Laura Delahaye, known for The Punisher, are also involved as co-executive producers.

All seven seasons of Malcolm in the Middle are now streaming on Disney+.
