**Warning: Contains full spoilers for Sirens on Netflix.**
In just five episodes, Sirens stands out as an original series on Netflix that’s hard to resist binge-watching. However, what some viewers might find surprising is that its conclusion carries a somewhat bittersweet tone at best.
In this show, Julianne Moore portrays Michaela, an elusive billionaire who has formed a powerful connection with her employee, Simone DeWitt (played by Milly Alcock). This relationship has caused Michaela to be separated from her family for extended periods of time.
Meghann Fahy’s character, Devon (the older sister), is enraged because she’s been solely responsible for caring for their ailing father, Bruce (played by Bill Camp), while juggling a challenging job under a tough supervisor.
Over the span of a critical weekend, tensions reach their peak at Michaela’s estate, revealing hidden truths and leading to momentous decisions that will reshape lives.
Dive into this comprehensive, spoiler-laden recap of the Sirens series finale on Netflix, featuring an exclusive sit-down with creator and showrunner Molly Smith Metzler who delves deep into the crucial scenes that shaped the climax of the season.
Sirens ending explained: Creator talks shocking finale

In the last installment of Sirens, sisters Simone and Devon bid a potentially permanent farewell to each other. Simone makes the decision to embrace a luxurious lifestyle with tycoon Peter, played by Kevin Bacon, rather than reuniting with their ailing father at home.
Over the last day, the younger DeWitt sister found herself in a challenging situation. Her bond with Ethan (Glenn Howerton) deteriorated significantly, and her relationship with Michaela started to crumble as their trust diminished quickly.
The situation escalated when Michaela decided to terminate Simone’s employment, who was previously her dear friend and confidant, following the discovery by a private detective that Simone had been caught on camera kissing Peter.
The story Simone shared was entirely accurate – Peter was indeed the one who started the kiss, and Simone swiftly ended it – yet it didn’t prevent Michaela from viewing her valued assistant as a potential danger to her marriage.
Eager to avoid going back to her hardship-filled life in Buffalo under the care of her neglectful father, Simone resorted to extreme measures to safeguard her newfound luxurious lifestyle.
She deceives Michaela by revealing to Peter about the private detective she employed and guiding him towards the secure location of photographs that could implicate him. This action would have voided the prenuptial agreement they had, allowing Michaela to claim his wealth.
Instead of asking him directly, he orders his trusted associate Jose to eliminate the incriminating proof, and then, with a chilling indifference reminiscent of a formal work termination rather than a loving goodbye, he ends his marriage to Michaela.
On that exact day, he introduced Simone as his new companion, effortlessly filling the spot beside him that Michaela previously held, also welcoming his children and grandchildren – a group he had been kept apart from by his former wife’s disapproval.
Devon struggles to identify the changed individual that Simone now is, finding it difficult to connect with her secluded lifestyle. Instead, he decides to return to Buffalo, where they grew up, to tend to their ailing father who is battling dementia as it worsens.
Making this decision isn’t straightforward, considering Trevor Salter’s tempting invitation for a lavish boat trip with her love interest Morgan. However, she decides that her duty lies elsewhere, where she is required the most – at least for the time being.
Why does Simone get together with Peter?

In an interview, Molly Smith Metzler, the mind behind Sirens, explains that the plotline pushes the character Simone into a state of survival, where she resorts to various means to steer clear of the emotional turmoil linked to her past, which still resonates in her childhood home.
The screenwriter noted, “There seem to be two versions of the story – one we tell ourselves and the other that truly happens. I believe Simone might be crafting her own unique narrative, which allows her to carry out her actions.
What I always remember about Simone is the hardships she’s faced… Going home for her isn’t simply returning; it’s revisiting those traumatic experiences.
Metzler went on to say: “The one she relied upon and cherished let her down by firing her without heeding her concerns. It seems to me, finding oneself in such an intense predicament, can evoke a fight-or-flight response.
This person isn’t someone who will easily give up. Instead, they’re a determined and resilient individual who will undoubtedly remain standing, regardless of how challenging the circumstances may seem. I hold Simone in high regard.
Although she might not deeply feel affection for Peter, she is willing to form a partnership with him to preserve the social standing, comfort, and security she enjoys within his home.
What’s next for Michaela after her divorce?

In the end, we find Michaela leaving on a ferry, abruptly evicted from the house where she had lived for numerous years. However, it doesn’t automatically imply that’s the final chapter in her life’s story.
“I think she’s gonna take a ding, but she’s gonna be okay.”
Metzler mused about possible paths for Michaela: “Perhaps she’ll choose to be a unique type of lawyer, such as one who focuses on animal rights or the environment, though I can’t say for certain.
“But I think that is a character who’s gonna land on her feet, for sure.”
Will Devon get her happy ending?

In the climactic scene of the series finale of Sirens, it’s heartbreaking when Devon turns down a sea voyage invitation from charming firefighter Morgan. However, the show’s creator, Molly Smith Metzler, hints that we might see them sailing together down the coast someday.
She doesn’t have the opportunity to consider herself in such a manner at the moment, but perhaps that will change in the future! That’s my prediction. Perhaps this is her initial move. She’s planning on returning to Buffalo. I believe she’ll start focusing on her own well-being.
Currently, it seems Devon is devoted to looking after her ailing father, choosing to overlook the negligence she experienced from him towards herself and Simone during their childhood, in order to provide support when he needs it most – during his weakest and loneliest moments.
