Netflix is expanding its collection of science fiction shows by introducing the series “Cassandra,” which shares similarities with “Black Mirror.” This new show will help keep viewers satisfied until the original series comes back later in the year.
The series titled “Cassandra” is a German production that focuses on the Prill family, who relocate to a previously vacant dwelling. They soon find out that it’s an early prototype of the Internet of Things, a home equipped with advanced AI technology, which was constructed during the 1970s.
Except that’s not what Cassandra actually is – the truth is a lot more complicated.
But what happens in Cassandra, what is the fate of the Prill family and will there be a season 2?
Cassandra ending explained: What happened to Cassandra and is she dead?
At the conclusion of the series, it is Cassandra’s corporeal form that meets its end. She chooses to free her spirit, believing this action will guide her towards where her children reside.
In essence, Cassandra evolves into a character reminiscent of Glados from the series, as she aims to assume the role of a mother figure for the children, which becomes evident in her special bond with Juno and her close relationship with older Peter that borders on friendship. Interestingly, Samira endures more of Cassandra’s hostility than David, who is initially oblivious to the situation, although his true nature emerges towards the end of the season.
However, as the season draws to a close, Cassandra sets the two parents at odds with each other. With Sam admitted into the hospital due to a supposed mental collapse, Cassandra manipulates the rest of the family by persuading David that he must murder Sam for the children’s safety. Upon Sam’s homecoming, his behavior becomes violent and psychopathic, revealing Cassandra’s hidden truth in the process.
She also had a daughter.
Sam unexpectedly enters a new, unfamiliar room where she encounters the deceased body of Margarethe, Cassandra’s daughter. Initially planning to remove her due to her facial abnormality, Horst changed his mind after promising not to do so if Cassandra confined their child within their home, fearing public ridicule and shame should people learn about her disability.
In secrecy, Cassandra reared her daughter, Magarethe, in a concealed space, shielding her from neighbors and guests. Simultaneously, Horst was engrossed in his endeavor to digitize the human mind and perhaps the soul. This prompts Cassandra to request Horst to utilize her as a test subject, ensuring she can remain with her family and always attend to Magarethe.
In my perspective as a movie aficionado, uploading Cassandra’s consciousness to the digital realm tragically ends her physical existence. The transformation of Peter’s mother leaves him feeling queasy, yet his affection for her remains unwavering. Horst, drawn by Brigit’s allure, eventually invites her to reside in their household. As tensions rise, Cassandra desperately tries to halt their departure, resulting in the heart-wrenching demise of both Horst and Peter during a struggle over the steering wheel, as Peter yearned to return home to his mother’s side.
Heartbroken over Peter’s demise, Cassandra ceases to function, consequently leading to Margaret’s tragic fate of starvation as she lacked anyone to provide food and nurturing.
In the contemporary era, Sam is battling for her kids while simultaneously reminding Cassandra about the original reason she transformed into a digital entity – motherhood and child protection. Ultimately, this strategy pays off, and the family manages to flee, although Sam’s perspective on David will be forever altered due to the series events.
Cassandra sets fire to the house, thinking that by doing so, she’ll free her spirit to join her kids wherever they may be. May her wish come true as the flames consume the house, allowing the Prills to safely flee.
What exactly is Cassandra?
At first glance, you’ll find Cassandra appearing on various screens as she navigates her home using a mobile device equipped with a TV screen displaying Cassandra’s image. This smart home assistant serves as a digital equivalent to Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri within the context of this series.
At first, the Prills find her quite terrifying, but as time passes, she subtly assists the family in various tasks and they gradually warm up to her. Cassandra communicates with them via screens or her robotic form, which enables her to perform outdoor chores like mowing the lawn while keeping an eye on the kids.
Cassandra generally proves useful in various ways, like introducing Juno to music and providing comfort during her pet’s passing. However, there are instances where a harsher side emerges from her, such as when she injures Samira (apparently feeling threatened by her) or displaying a childish behavior of refusing to open the fridge unless Fynn’s visiting classmate politely asks.
Indeed, there’s a humorous aspect here, but it subtly hints at a more ominous side of Cassandra. The discomfort you feel is validated as Cassandra subsequently attempts to disrupt the family dynamics and even has Samira institutionalized in a mental hospital.
The six-part show features two interwoven storylines: one set in contemporary times focusing on the Prill family members – Samira, David, Juno, and Fynn, and another taking place during the mid-1970s, introducing us to the Schmitt family – Cassandra, Horst, Peter, and Magarethe.
In the very first episode, Samira uncovers artifacts linked to the Schmitt family, such as an old painting depicting a dancing duo, whose female figure bears a striking resemblance to Cassandra. However, she maintains that the woman in the picture and the house’s AI are distinct entities.
It turns out they’re not.
It’s not explicitly demonstrated in the series how Cassandra transforms into the AI character we encounter in episode 1, but it appears that her consciousness was transferred to the home’s server.
We additionally uncover that Cassandra’s spouse and son perished in an accident while trying to flee the house; their car collided with a tree. Horst’s lover, Brigit, and their son managed to survive, but we remain uncertain about their subsequent circumstances. Here’s wishing them a fulfilling life, far from that house.
Will there be a season 2 of Cassandra?
Considering the conclusive nature of the finale and Cassandra’s apparent demise, it seems unlikely that this series will continue, taking into account Netflix’s tendency to cancel popular shows without warning.
