In the latest tale from One Piece, we gain further insights into the God Valley Incident, an event shrouded in mystery that reveals the authentic character of the Celestial Dragons. Eight centuries ago, following the formation of the World Government, 19 out of 20 ruling nations handed over their kingdoms to trusted monarchs and migrated to Mariejois with their families. The Alabasta family remained as rulers due to the affection of their people. The Celestial Dragons are safeguarded by the Admirals, and they operate beyond any law’s reach, able to take lives or ruin them at will. Additionally, they have the privilege of owning slaves, considering human lives insignificant to them.
As a bystander, I’ve witnessed a chilling pattern: The World Government not only turns a blind eye to the Celestial Dragons’ atrocities, but often aids them when it suits them. If a Celestial Dragon desires a slave, there’s no one who can refuse, lest they face retaliation from an Admiral. Even in the Sabaody Archipelago, I saw Kizaru himself, knowing about the illicit trading of people, particularly Fish-Men and Mermaids by Saint Charlos and others. Yet, when he was ordered to confront Luffy, who had defended Hachi by punching Charlos, Kizaru executed his duty ruthlessly, disregarding questions of right or wrong. For over 800 years, such acts have been a disturbing normality, but it wasn’t until Kuma’s backstory unfolded that we truly grasped the depravity of the Celestial Dragons.
One Piece’s Celestial Dragons Turned Genocide into a Competition
The real story of the God Valley Incident remained secret due to the partnership between Garp and Roger. But when Kuma’s past was disclosed, it became clear there was more to uncover. Initially, God Valley was a tranquil nation that had no ties with the World Government. To maintain their oppressive rule, the World Government forces nations to align with them, and defiance carries severe penalties. Every three years, the Celestial Dragons single out a resistant nation, slaughtering its inhabitants for mere entertainment.
In the Native Hunting Contest, the revered Holy Knights demonstrate their prowess by earning points for slain ‘rabbits’, a term used for their targets. The World Nobles, infamously cruel, use disposable slaves as targets too. For these noblemen, the agonizing cries of the oppressed are merely sources of amusement. When the God Valley Incident was first discussed in Episode 958, it was revealed that both slaves and Celestial Dragons were present on the island during the conflict between pirates and Marines.
In a way no one could have foreseen, the truth turned out to be far more appalling than anyone dared imagine. What we now know is that not only does the World Government and its top Marines know the true identity of the so-called Nobles, but they also support them in every conceivable manner. Luffy’s transformation into Nika has become even more significant in light of this revelation. The events unfolding in Episode 1130 offer just a small glimpse into the tragedy from Kuma’s point of view. It seems likely that Oda will soon explore the past, perhaps delving into the conflict with the Rocks Pirates in greater depth.
