Shocking Twists in A Thousand Blows Finale: Who Survives and Who’s Left Behind?

*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for the final episode of A Thousand Blows.*

As I settled into the climactic episode of A Thousand Blows, it became abundantly clear that the tension had reached an all-time high. The characters, particularly Sugar (Stephen Graham), Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby), and Mary (Erin Doherty), were pushed to their absolute limits as they grappled with situations that seemed only to grow more intense.

In an attempt to prevent her own group from being falsely accused of the murder of the Chinese Embassy official and the theft of the silverware, Mary chose to disclose Mr. Lao’s location to the police.

The gradual development of Mary and Hezekiah’s romantic tension, filled with hints of a possible relationship, continued. Their shared moments extended to spending the night together, a move that intensified Sugar’s feelings of envy.

In the second-to-last episode, it was unveiled that Sugar had proposed marriage to Mary, a proposition she handled uneasily and declined. From there, matters took a turn for the worse in Sugar’s life.

After Treacle (James Nelson-Joyce) stepped into Sugar’s position at the West End boxing club, Sugar went as far as to exclude his own sibling from the local tavern, and in a startling turn of events, he brutally attacked him, leaving Treacle seemingly lifeless.

As a cinema enthusiast, let me tell you that the final scene wasn’t just any ordinary moment – it was a heart-stopping revelation. The tragic demise of Alec (Francis Lovehall) at the hands of a masked figure left me stunned – an Elephant Boy exacting revenge against Mary, under the mistaken belief he was Hezekiah.

So, what actually happened in the A Thousand Blows finale? Read on for a full breakdown.

A Thousand Blows ending explained: What happens to Hezekiah and Mary?

The narrative opens as Hezekiah finds himself immersed in the nine-night Jamaican funeral rite, following the demise of Alec. Despite being among the Forty Elephants and Mary, there’s an undeniable sense of solitude as he grapples with the absence of his cherished friend.

After nine consecutive nights, they held a funeral for Alec. During this event, Mary was unexpectedly visited by Indigo Jeremy, the leader of the Elephant Boys, who was portrayed by Robert Glenister. Later on, during the wake, he subtly made a threatening remark.

In my perspective, after some contentious choices concerning the Forty Elephants, I found myself standing with Mary. However, due to my apprehension about the direction she had led us towards, I followed Eliza’s guidance in disbanding our loyal group. We communicated our decision to Mary and bid her farewell, choosing to return to Jane’s (Susan Lynch). This left Mary on her own.

With Alice (Darci Shaw) being the sole member remaining in their group, Mary confides that she intends to depart for New York to see her father residing there. However, prior to her departure, she wishes to clear up certain matters and enlists Alice’s aid in locating a corpse.

Next, we find Hezekiah going to meet Mr. Lao in his cell. He shares with Lao the tragic news about Alec’s death. In response, Lao reveals that he is expected to be extradited to the Chinese government, who will execute him for his wrongdoing.

Lao advises Hezekiah to harness his anger and feelings by focusing on his upcoming battle with Buster Williams, which is exactly what Hezekiah does by returning to his training regimen.

At the West End Boxing Club, the excitement is building up towards Hezekiah’s major fight. In the locker room, he encounters a representative from Buster’s crew who suggests manipulating the outcome of the match.

As I unravel the details later on, it becomes clear that Mary had meticulously orchestrated a daring scheme to free Lao from prison. In an unexpected twist, Alice disguised herself as a visiting nun, seeking an audience with Lao. Pledging haste, she clandestinely poured what seemed like sacred water (in truth, it was petrol) into Lao’s cell and ignited it. The ensuing commotion left me worried for Lao’s wellbeing, but moments later, I found myself astonished as I saw him sitting opposite Alice and Mary in a carriage.

They convey to Lao that due to certain circumstances, he is essentially a changed man now, and the decoy body sourced by Alice will pose as him to avoid raising suspicions. They suggest that he should leave for Liverpool and establish a new identity there, with no plans of returning to the East End.

However, Lao expresses his discontentment with the plan, voicing his concerns about Hezekiah and the crucial role he plays. Mary mentions she’s previously acted for Hezekiah but is unwilling to reconsider. That evening, Mary informs Hezekiah that Lao is safe due to her intervention – yet must confess to initially handing him over to the police.

Mary shares with Hezekiah that she envisions a grander future for them both. Following his upcoming battle, if Hezekiah triumphs over Buster, he will gain recognition in America and the earnings from this victory will facilitate their move to the United States effortlessly. To Mary, this transition presents an opportunity for them to advance their careers in the U.S., but it is contingent on Hezekiah’s success in the fight.

On the day of the scuffle, Eliza along with her fellow Forty Elephants concoct a strategy for the day, intending to pilfer amidst the throng. Meanwhile, Mary and Alice keep a watchful eye on them from across the room.

As Hezekiah prepares to step into the ring, a letter arrives from Victoria Davies (Aliyah Odoffin) expressing her conviction that he will emerge victorious.

At the beginning of the game, Hezekiah shows intense feelings, initially seeming powerful, but eventually encountering a formidable opponent in Buster. As the match progresses, Hezekiah struggles to regain his footing, appearing stunned and unresponsive as Buster delivers a decisive knockout blow.

After he falls, Hezekiah experiences a moment of recollection about his past in Jamaica, which seems to rekindle his determination and motivate him to rise again and continue the match. However, his last punch proves too powerful for Buster; he remains motionless on the ground.

Since it seems the game has ended, Hezekiah insists that Buster emerges for a handshake. Meanwhile, Victoria converses with Mary outside the room, disclosing she’s aware of her disguise. In anticipation of potential criticism, Victoria informs Mary that Hezekiah won’t be honored like a victor and suggests they meet up in her carriage outside.

According to Victoria, the atmosphere in the hall noticeably changes when it’s disclosed that Buster has tragically passed away, making the match invalid. Consequently, Mary and Hezekiah find themselves caught up in a chaotic situation as they try to escape, but fortunately, the Forty Elephants manage to clear a path for them amidst the confusion.

They slipped into Victoria’s carriage and sped off, eventually finding comfort in The Blue Coat Boy with the Forty Elephants. Mary informs Hezekiah that he is the true victor, despite the dismal result of the contest. Consequently, Mary suggests they must depart from London immediately, as their exit plans are already arranged.

After Mary departs with plans to reunite later that evening, Hezekiah finds himself on his own. Not long after, Sugar drops by, proposing a beverage for him.

What happens to Sugar?

In the final scene, Sugar grapples with the remorse of assaulting his brother, triggering a memory of that fateful night. As Sugar exited the pub, there was a gathering of people (including Treacle’s relatives) who grew increasingly appalled by Sugar’s actions, suspecting him of causing harm to Treacle.

However, in the here and now, Sugar finds his nephew standing before him, informing him that Treacle is actually alive and not deceased.

In the current moment, Sugar is taken aback to see his nephew there, who reveals that Treacle is indeed awake and not gone for good.

In a turn of events, Sweetness pays a hospital visit to Honey, but Honey’s spouse objects. However, Honey permits Sweetness’ entry against his wife’s wishes. Honey instructs Sweetness to keep his distance from him, his family, particularly the eldest son. Remarkably, despite this warning, Sweetness informs Honey that he can assume control over The Blue Cloak Boy.

At a later time, Sugar encounters Punch (Daniel Mays), who questions whether Sugar has adequately considered his decision to relinquish the pub, given that Treacle is still alive. However, as Sugar is on the verge of finalizing the agreement, Jane pops up for a chat, hinting they need to talk about Mary and Hezekiah.

In the show’s closing scene, although we’re unsure about the specifics of their discussion, it appears that Sugar hints to Hezekiah that he possesses vital details for him. Remarkably, Sugar reveals at the end that Mary is aware of the identity of Alec’s killer.

Do Hezekiah and Mary leave London?

That evening, when they crossed paths, Hezekiah was visibly distressed upon seeing Mary. He asked her to keep her distance and addressed her sharply. However, Mary appeared to instinctively understand the situation, yet Hezekiah demanded an explanation from her, questioning how she could possibly maintain eye contact with him.

Mary urges him to listen to her side of things, claiming she made an effort to prevent it, but Hezekiah dismisses it as a fabrication. While Mary acknowledges her habitual dishonesty, she reveals that her feelings for Hezekiah are genuine and the one constant truth in her life.

However, Hezekiah informs Mary that their relationship is over, ultimately taking her belongings and departing with tears. Alone now, Hezekiah remains on the road, evidently struggling to comprehend the recent events.
