Shocking Wolverine Backstory Revealed: How Infinity War Almost Changed Everything!

In an interesting twist, the Russo Brothers almost incorporated elements from Deadpool and Wolverine’s backstory in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame during the MCU phase. Marvel Studios managed to accomplish something unimaginable for more than two decades – integrating Fox’s X-Men universe into the MCU through a crossover movie featuring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. Currently, these characters are alive and playing roles in the MCU’s Earth-10005, and it’s just a matter of time before they interact with the Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and other multiversal X-Men.

Although Logan concludes Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine, Deadpool & Wolverine introduces a fresh take on the mutant character. Jackman’s new Wolverine in this film is not linked to the one from Logan, but they share similar life stages. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Wolverine emerges alive after a massacre of mutants and embarks on an unforeseen quest, which presents him with an opportunity for redemption. Interestingly, there are parallels between these different timeline versions of Wolverine as well.

Deadpool & Wolverine Added A New Tragedy To Logan’s Life

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Logan Variant Witnessed The Death Of His Universe’s X-Men

In the comic series titled “Deadpool & Wolverine“, the character Wade Wilson encounters a particularly unfortunate version of Wolverine from the multiverse. This Wolverine has ceased his battles, and it’s later unveiled that humans had attacked mutantkind, with him unable to save the X-Men. After the X-Men suffered an off-screen defeat, this Wolverine abandoned his heroic persona and resorted to excessive drinking as a means of coping. The Wolverine character portrayed by Hugh Jackman in the MCU shares a similar background with another variant, who was left with survivor’s guilt after most mutants worldwide were eradicated.

Infinity War & Endgame Almost Gave Wolverine A Different Version Of His Phase 5 Backstory

Wolverine’s Tragic MCU Backstory Would Have Happened Due To Thanos

In a 2019 interview with IGN, the Russos expressed their desire to incorporate the X-Men in Avengers: Infinity War. Their proposed team included Cyclops, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Jean Grey, and Wolverine. The Russos envisioned all except Wolverine succumbing to Thanos’ Snap, which would have fueled a determined Wolverine to pursue the Mad Titan. However, this was just a hypothetical scenario since an Avengers-X-Men crossover wasn’t practical because 20th Century Fox owned the film rights for X-Men at that time.

The idea of Wolverine’s actions being fueled by the demise of the X-Men was quite progressive. In fact, this theme was portrayed in the movie ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ five years later. Interestingly, this plot resembles Hawkeye’s storyline in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, where Clint Barton sought vengeance for his family’s presumed deaths by tracking down criminals to channel his rage. Had Wolverine appeared in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, he might have been the most formidable version yet, surpassing the older and more hardened versions portrayed in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘Logan’.

Deadpool & Wolverine Makes Logan’s New Backstory More Tragic Than Ever

Deadpool & Wolverine’s Backstory Is Even Sadder Than The Russos’ Idea For Avengers: Infinity War And Endgame

In a different wording: The absence of the X-Men during Avengers: Infinity War might have brought Wolverine into the Marvel Cinematic Universe earlier, but the emotions behind his actions in Avengers: Endgame wouldn’t have been as potent as those depicted in Deadpool & Wolverine. Notably, the characters from these two films who supposedly died are not expected to return because they were presumably killed permanently by humans. Unlike the victims of the Snap, who can come back when Hulk performs the second Snap, these mutants cannot be resurrected due to their permanent demise.

In the fictional world of Wolverine’s alternate universe, it’s heartbreaking that we may never see him reunite with the original X-Men, as their off-screen deaths significantly reduce the chances of this happening. Characters like Loki, Gamora, Quicksilver, and Thanos have come back from the dead, but they are not the same versions we knew before. Similarly, it’s been confirmed that some original X-Men will return in Avengers: Doomsday, but these may be new versions from a different universe. However, the good news is that Hugh Jackman’s current Wolverine might live longer than his Logan counterpart, meaning he could carry his guilt for a prolonged period yet also have an opportunity to encounter a fresh group of X-Men.
