As a die-hard fan and the dedicated showrunner for Netflix’s “One Piece” since day one, I’ve always been thrilled to share my ardor for the Grand Line‘s adventures. Last year at Netflix Geeked Week, I couldn’t contain my excitement any longer, taking center stage to talk about Season 2 and give fans a sneak peek with casting updates. Time and again, I’ve shown my unwavering affection for the Straw Hat Pirates, making this moment bittersweet indeed. It is with a heavy heart that I announce my decision to step down as showrunner for our successful Netflix series.
Matt Owens announced on his Instagram that he’s leaving the live-action series “One Piece” to concentrate on his mental well-being. In his post, Owens wrote: “The past six years working on ‘One Piece’ have been an incredible, dream-come-true journey. But it’s also been incredibly demanding. So I’m taking a break from the Going Merry to focus on myself and my mental health. Thank you so much to Oda, Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, and the entire cast and crew for your trust, collaboration, and dedication. For now, I’ll take some time off, do some therapy, try my hand at Marvel Rivals, and return rejuvenated for new adventures. Thanks to everyone who has supported me. See you soon!
What Does This Mean For One Piece’s Second Season?
At the time this article was written, Netflix hasn’t confirmed if Matt Owens’ departure will impact the future of the series. Earlier in the year, filming for the second season ended, with settings like Whiskey Peak, Drum Island, Loguetown, and Little Garden among others featured. As of now, Netflix hasn’t made an official comment regarding Matt Owens’ recent social media post, leaving us unsure about the potential consequences for the live-action Straw Hats. From his post, it appears that Matt Owens may return at some point, but it remains to be seen who will take over if Netflix decides to produce a third season.
Previously, Taz Skylar, himself, highly commended the work of Matt Owens on the series last year. Here’s what he expressed: “In my opinion, the showrunner, Matt Owens, is crucial to the success or failure of the program. It’s impressive that they manage to capture our chemistry on screen, making it feel authentic and genuine. They highlight our strengths and create a platform for us to shine. In essence, they bring truth to what transpires among us, showcasing how we complement each other.
