In September, FX’s “Shogun” swept the Primetime Emmys with a total of 18 awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Lead Actress, and Outstanding Drama Series. This broke the record for most Emmy wins by a show in one year. Tonight, the series added to its collection of trophies, winning four Golden Globe Awards, including Best TV Series – Drama. The team behind “Shogun” can celebrate another win tonight, and with these accolades, the future looks promising for the show. Fans will be happy to hear that there may be a second season in the works.
At the Golden Globes following their victory, creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks shared updates on the progress of upcoming episodes for their series. They confirmed that while Season 2 is in progress, they are still pushing forward, refusing to give up, and hinted at more information. “Season 2 is ongoing, but I’m not sure what we can say,” Kondo told reporters. Marks then added a bit more detail about the development of Shogun season 2, stating, “We are roughly six weeks from wrapping up the writer’s room.
Initially marketed as a limited series on FX Networks, Shogun was initially perceived as unlikely to have a second season, with creators hinting during airtime. However, the outstanding critical praise and massive viewership seemed to change their minds, prompting announcements that the show’s lead actor, Hiroyuki Sanda, had agreed to return for more episodes.
Immediately following this announcement came the exciting news that Shogun had not only been renewed for a second season, but also for a third! This left some viewers puzzled as the first season of ten episodes was a faithful adaptation of the 1975 novel by James Clavell. If there is indeed a second season, the creators of Shogun will either have to continue the story or possibly adapt one of Clavell’s other books. At this time, it remains unclear which path they plan to take. However, Marks has given a hint that should alleviate some fan concerns about the show’s future.
In a conversation with one of our esteemed historical consultants last summer, Marks shared some intriguing insights with Variety. He asked for more details on William Adams and Tokugawa Ieyasu, and expressed curiosity about new characters and current events. Marks added that while history is on their side, the exciting journey ahead has no clear path as there’s no precedent for where they’re going. However, they are fully aware of how the story concludes in the end.
It seems that as of now, there’s no fixed release date for Season 2 of “Shogun,” as FX hasn’t announced one yet. However, since the writers’ room is only six weeks away from completion, it might mean a longer wait until we get to see more episodes.
