The second season of “Shogun” is being worked on right now, and fans who adore James Clavell’s celebrated novel are both nervous and thrilled to see how FX will take the series in new directions while deviating from the original story. In 2024, Shogun made a big splash as the year’s top drama, earning numerous Emmys this year and becoming a hot topic in pop culture discussions. Since then, fans have been left guessing about what will transpire in Season 2, but one of the show’s returning actors, Takehiro Hira, has shared some insights on what to anticipate, including a significant character death!
Takehiro Hira recently spoke with George Edelman from MovieWeb, and the well-known Japanese actor shared some unexpected details about Season 2 of “Shogun.” He stated, “Yes, there is a planned second season for Shogun, and it will be filmed next year. As far as I’m aware, I am expected to be part of it.” However, it should be noted that FX has not yet officially confirmed Hira’s casting. So far, only Hiroyuki Sanada (who also serves as an executive producer) and Cosmo Jarvis have been confirmed to return for the next season.
Although Seasons 2 and 3 of “Shogun” aren’t derived from a second novel, James Clavell’s extensive work is rooted in actual history. The narrative unfolds during Japan’s late Sengoku era, also known as the Warring States period (1467-1615). Takehiro Hira didn’t disclose specific plot points about the forthcoming second season, but he did clarify that the new seasons will be deeply influenced by the historical events of the time. Unfortunately for his character, Ishido Kazunari, who is modeled after the real Japanese lord, Ishida Mitsunari, this could spell trouble. Hira added:
Afterward, it’s worth noting that my character, Ishido, is loosely based on a real historical figure. Consequently, I expect him to meet his end, but the creators and showrunners are employing creative tactics to explore various facets of this character in future scenes.
Can ‘Shogun’ Achieve Similar Success With Season 2?
In 2024, Shogun, seemingly unexpectedly, emerged as the standout series of the year, and even potentially the best of the 2020s thus far. Previous readers of the book had already sensed the show’s potential, but once a wider audience started watching, they couldn’t get enough. Consequently, FX confirmed that the series would continue for two additional seasons after the finale of Season 1.
Showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have demonstrated their ability to transform the novel into a series format with Season 1. However, as they move forward into Seasons 2 and 3, there’s a big question mark about whether they can maintain that level of success without the novel serving as a blueprint. The anticipation among fans for the upcoming seasons is palpable. Given the significant alterations Kondo and Marks made to the book’s narrative during Season 1, expectations are running high that the series will continue to be just as captivating. You can stream ‘Shogun’ on Hulu.
