Shōgun star gives update on season 2 – reveals when shooting starts

As a fan who has been captivated by the historical epic series Shōgun since its initial release, I must say that the recent announcement of not one, but two additional seasons is nothing short of exhilarating! The first season was a masterful adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, and to think that we’ll be delving deeper into this rich world is simply thrilling.

Enthusiasts of the historical epic series Shōgun were delighted this year with the unexpected news that the show is coming back to Disney Plus not just for a second season, but also for a third! This is surprising because it’s based on a single book and was originally marketed as a miniseries.

Initially, the first season of the series was adapted from the 1975 novel by James Clavell with the same title, with each episode delving deeply into the storyline. Now, Hiroyuki Sanada, the producer and lead actor, has shared insights on how they secured a renewal and why they chose to continue telling more tales.

As a passionate cinephile, I initially didn’t envision a Season 2, as we had already adapted the novel in Season 1. Consequently, I viewed it as a miniseries. However, considering the significance of this project as a platform for future Japanese talent, I realized its production was essential. As an actor, I felt I had given my best and wrapped up, but as a producer, the opportunity to foster new generations of Japanese crew and cast was too compelling to pass up.

When I moved to Los Angeles twenty years ago, one of my goals was to tackle the significant divide between East and West that I noticed then. In our era, I aspire to shatter this barrier and construct a bridge for future generations.

“My goal is to carry on with this venture, given our recent triumph and the chance to produce additional seasons. Why should I halt? Not just as an actor, but also from a producer’s perspective, I believe it’s important to continue for future generations. Therefore, I chose to seize the opportunity for seasons 2 and 3.”

Sanada went on to say: “This is an excellent chance for our budding actors and team members. Consequently, we’re no longer working with novels, but this frees up the writers. We have a rich history, real-life examples, and a clear understanding of events that transpired. There are numerous episodes in our history that can serve as inspiration.”

As a writer myself, I fully understand the joy of creative freedom that comes with crafting original stories. Over the years, I’ve learned that this kind of artistic liberty is deeply ingrained in us, much like our genetic makeup (DNA). Just as James Clavell masterfully did, we should always respect the style and work of our predecessors while using it as a foundation to build upon and create something entirely new. I eagerly anticipate reading the first drafts from these writers, as their unique perspectives are sure to breathe fresh life into their stories.

The celebrity shared that production for season 2 will likely begin sometime in the following year, as the writers’ workspace is currently active and they hope to commence filming during the summer of 2025.

Before an official renewal, co-creator Justin Marks expressed a willingness for a second season, contingent on discovering a compelling narrative.

Yet, he expressed then: “But I don’t believe anyone desires to ski beyond their depth without a guide and the necessary tools. The question is, does the public crave more of it?”

As someone who has always been a fan of historical dramas and samurai films, I couldn’t be more thrilled to share that all ten episodes of Shōgun season 1 are now available for streaming on Disney Plus! Being able to watch this captivating series anytime, anywhere is a luxury that not everyone had access to before. If you’re like me and have been eagerly waiting to immerse yourself in the world of feudal Japan, then it’s time to sign up for Disney Plus.
