Shonen Jump Redemption?! Cancelled Creators Return!

Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, published by Shueisha, is set to introduce new series during the summer months. The most recent addition comes from a duo of creators whose previous work was unexpectedly terminated four years ago. This year has been marked by significant changes for Weekly Shonen Jump as it grappled with the aftermath of losing two of its top performers, “My Hero Academia” and “Jujutsu Kaisen,” in quick succession during the first half of 2025. Additionally, popular long-running series such as “Mission: Yozakura Family” and “Undead Unluck” concluded in the early part of this year as well.

Ever since the summer season began, it’s become quite a cutthroat race among the Shonen Jump publications. They’re not only debuting fresh serializations in search of their next big success, but they’re also saying goodbye to underperforming series that haven’t quite found their stride. As seasoned professionals in this field, writer Togo Goto and artist Kento Matsuura have re-entered the Shonen Jump arena with a new baseball manga series titled “Harukaze Mound.“.

What Is Harukaze Mound?

The Harukaze Mound manga has launched its inaugural chapter in the most recent edition of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, filling the void left by Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery, which was recently terminated. This new series may also be replacing other mangas that have concluded abruptly over the past month. However, regardless of the circumstances, Harukaze Mound brings a fresh taste of sports to Shonen Jump, a genre that has been scarce outside of newer titles like Embers, which might soon face cancellation as well.

In this series, viewers meet twin siblings: Aokaze and Nagiharu. Since childhood, they’ve dreamt of playing at Koshien, Japan’s High School Baseball Championship. Aokaze, the younger brother, is a natural prodigy and excels as one of the top pitchers in their middle school. He even attracts attention from prestigious high schools for his skills. However, Nagiharu, the elder sibling, isn’t as gifted. But when a new student joins their team and helps him develop his unique pitching style, Nagiharu starts to show promise. It now appears that both brothers may follow separate paths in pursuit of their dreams in the future.

Who Are Harukaze Mound’s Creators?

What’s particularly exciting about the Harukaze Mound is the talented duo responsible for it. Previously, they created the Horror-themed manga Phantom Seer, which was published in a well-known magazine. Unfortunately, this series concluded prematurely after just over a year and 30 chapters due to its cancellation. However, it gained popularity among fans thanks to the striking illustrations by Kento Matsuura. Interestingly, Matsuura also collaborated on another canceled series in the same magazine called Tokyo Shinobi Squad, this time with writer Yuki Tanaka. Regrettably, that project didn’t last long either.

Supporters of Matsuura have been eagerly anticipating a prolonged success for the artist in Shonen Jump, and it appears that “Harukaze Mound” is well-positioned to achieve this. As Shonen Jump currently lacks a significant hit, it’s a sports series, but traditionally, baseball stories haven’t been successful in the magazine. The last attempt, “Nine Dragons’ Ball Parade“, also had a comparable narrative structure and was discontinued after just 20 chapters. However, we’ll have to wait and see how it unfolds. You can read the new chapters for free in their entirety through Viz Media’s digital Shonen Jump library or Shueisha’s MangaPlus service.
