Shonen Jump’s Shinobi Undercover Gets Animated Manga: Watch

As a longtime fan of Shonen Jump and someone who has witnessed countless manga debuts come and go, I must say that Ippon Takegushi and Santa Mitarashi’s Shinobi Undercover is a breath of fresh air. Having followed their previous work, Candy Flurry, albeit for a short stint, it’s truly heartening to see this creative duo grow and flourish in the competitive landscape of Weekly Shonen Jump.

Among the recent publications from Shonen Jump, the collaboration between Ippon Takegushi and Santa Mitarashi titled “Shinobi Undercover” started serialization in September. This series has garnered positive responses from fans of Shueisha’s prominent imprint. You can find it in Weekly Shonen Jump issue #42, with a total of 13 chapters currently accessible online. The manga revolves around Yodaka, a young ninja who previously lived covertly until he was given the mission to safeguard a high school girl named Aoi. As a result, he must step out of his comfort zone and adapt to living like an ordinary teenager while still fulfilling his shinobi duties.

To mark the initial popularity of the series, Weekly Shonen Jump has unveiled a trio of animated trailers showcasing illustrations from the manga to boost its promotion. The team behind Shinobi Undercover previously collaborated on another short-lived manga published in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, named Candy Flurry. This action-packed series ran from April 19, 2021, to September 13, 2021, and was later collected into three volumes. These volumes were subsequently published by Shueisha and Viz Media in the Western market.

The “Stealth Ninja” series, as opposed to their earlier serializations, has garnered much more popularity. However, it’s still finding its footing amidst the highly competitive environment of “Weekly Shonen Jump”. Extra promotional content hints at a promising future for this series.

Ippon and Santa Have Grown Significantly as a Creative Duo, and Shinobi Undercover Proves It

In their debut work, titled “Candy Flurry“, the dynamic duo displayed immense potential, even though its premature conclusion was unfortunate. Billed as a “humorous confectionary conflict” upon release, it garnered favorable feedback from critics. Sadly, it fell victim to the notorious “Shonen Jump” curse for new series, but it undeniably demonstrated that this budding duo could create a timeless battle shonen by infusing fresh and innovative elements into the genre’s formula. The narrative revolved around Tsumugi, a character gifted with the ability to fight using an oversized lollipop due to a mystical artifact called “Toy Toy Candy,” which granted her unique abilities. However, since a candy-wielder had previously caused massive destruction in Tokyo, she has had to hide her powers from the world.

The show, “Shinobi Undercover,” appears to have drawn significant influence from narratives featuring characters who hide their true identities, much like the protagonist in our new series does. To put it simply, the main character in “Shinobi Undercover” needs to keep his profession a secret because of societal prejudice. This theme has been brilliantly executed and expanded upon in a way that is undeniably more engaging than what was presented in “Candy Flurry.
