Should you, as a gamer, be picking up only Hall Effect Controllers to avoid drift?
A recent spark of interest has been lit since the Switch 2 controller announcement and specs.
But what is this Hall Effect, and is it somewhat related to Metal Gear in some way?
The Hall Effect
To clarify, the term “Hall Effect” doesn’t relate to urinating oneself as depicted in Metal Gear Solid’s character, Hall Otacon. Rather, it describes a phenomenon where an electric potential difference, or voltage, is produced across a conductor when it’s subjected to a magnetic field.
A Hall sensor can read the change in voltage, which can result in accurate contactless readings.
In simpler terms, for controller terminology, this refers to joysticks that employ magnets to track motion. This phenomenon might be familiar to you as “joystick drift,” a term often used among Nintendo enthusiasts.
The revised Joy-Con 2 controllers are newly designed and won’t include Hall Effect sticks, yet they provide a great tactile experience.

Joystick drift happens when continuous rubbing of friction and plastic wears out a controller’s potentiometer, making it malfunction and produce inaccurate readings. This results in unintended movement of your character or an overly sensitive joystick.
In theory, controllers leveraging the Hall Effect should experience less rapid drift compared to other types. The reason behind this advantage lies in the fact that the Hall Effect does not require any direct physical contact, resulting in less wear and tear over its lifespan.

Also, some have claimed that Hall Effect sensors are much more accurate and have no jitter.
Apart from these advantages, it’s also worth noting that it boasts improved resistance to dust and moisture. You may find your controller accumulating dust over time, especially with the delay in game releases for PS5. Yet, since the sensor relies on voltage readings, dust particles pose minimal interference and are less likely to cause issues.
Despite the query persisting: is it advisable to break your controller and tackle the Hall Effect concept now?
If It’s Broken Fix It
Straight up, no.
To clarify, I’m a fan of these joystick controllers and believe manufacturers ought to adopt them. However, if your current controller isn’t experiencing drift yet, there seems little reason for an upgrade at this time.
It’s important to note that just like potentiometers, there can be faulty Hall Effect controllers as well. While many manufacturers such as 8bitdo have developed and enhanced their controllers, some may still encounter initial issues. The main problem seems to be with the sensors, which often require additional software fine-tuning for optimal performance.

Essentially, I’m trying to say that these controllers may not significantly enhance your gaming skills. For superior accuracy, consider using a mouse instead. However, should you be in the market for new controllers due to malfunctions like drift, by all means, proceed with your purchase.
Remember, setting these joysticks up isn’t always straightforward and they can still get damaged if not handled carefully. Unfortunately, relying on the Hall Effect won’t prevent you from packing your controllers haphazardly! Ensure that the joysticks aren’t being pressed and are safely stored away properly.

While I concur that incorporating such controllers would be advantageous for companies like Sony, it’s unlikely they will do so due to their business practices resembling those seen in “The Sopranos” with regards to warranties and repairs. It’s been more than four years since the purchase of these controllers, yet the same issue persists, suggesting a potential flaw in their design or manufacturing process.
Ponder on the reason for investing a significant amount in repairs via those sources, and consider the frequent unavailability of required components. Moreover, it’s worth noting that perhaps the Switch 2 controllers would benefit from high-quality Hall Effect joysticks, given the past models’ reputation.
