Initially, FromSoftware’s “Soulsborne” role-playing games such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring have primarily been designed for individual play, allowing co-op summoning as an optional feature. However, with Elden Ring Nightreign – a fresh roguelike spinoff of the 2022 game – multiplayer has been integrated as a fundamental aspect of the gameplay experience.
Absolutely, Nightreign was specifically designed as a cooperative game, featuring a changing map and eight significant “Nightlord” battles meant to be tackled in teams of three. However, FromSoftware acknowledges that some players might not have companions to play with, prefer not to team up with strangers, or wish to enjoy the game offline. To cater to these players, there’s an option for single-player mode in addition to the standard three-player mode for expeditions.
However, if you’re contemplating playing Elden Ring: Nightreign alone, that’s a topic of interest among many enthusiasts. This is due to the fact that FromSoftware didn’t emphasize the single-player aspect in their marketing, and most reviews primarily discussed the gameplay experience in multiplayer mode.
At present, I would advise against embarking on a solo run alone. However, with time, the solo adventure might become significantly more pleasant.
From my perspective, for those not in the know, Nightreign operates differently than a typical game. Instead of meticulously exploring and customizing your character step by step as desired, you’re presented with eight distinct “Nightfarer” roles to choose from at each match. These roles come equipped with unique stat distributions and abilities tailored to specific playstyles, such as tanky Strength brawlers or backline sorcery casters.
As a tech enthusiast, I found myself hurled into an exhilarating adventure across a reimagined Elden Ring map of Limgrave. My objective: swiftly traverse various locations, vanquish mini-bosses, gather loot and enhancements in the form of randomized gear drops, and amass runes (experience) to level up. However, the challenge didn’t end there! A battle royale-inspired shrinking circle continuously encroached, forcing me towards an arena for a showdown with powerful bosses as twilight descended. This intense sequence repeated itself twice before I was whisked away for a climactic faceoff against a Nightlord boss.
Working together significantly enhances the gameplay, since having three companions allows you to conquer key locations and defeat bosses more swiftly. Your teammates can even comically resuscitate fallen allies by striking them, and many Nightfarer skills complement each other in numerous creative ways as well.
In Nightreign, the health of enemies and bosses is reduced for solo play, but this seems to be the only adjustment for single-player balance at present. However, it’s much harder to conquer mini-bosses and clear enemy bases on the map by yourself compared to playing with a team. Since there’s no one to revive you, going down even once in major boss fights can mean an instant end to your 45-minute solo run.

It’s not particularly enjoyable to play Nightreign on your own at the moment, but it might change soon. Interestingly, FromSoftware has announced that they will be making enhancements to the solo gameplay experience starting next week. In the upcoming Patch 1.02 update, they plan to introduce two crucial changes.
In an Expedition, one significant advantage is that you get a single free revival during battles with major night bosses. This applies not only to the battles at the end of each game day but also to the Nightlord battle itself. This means that if you die in these fights, you won’t lose your entire progress, making solo play more lenient and less frustrating.
Additionally, the quantity of runes that a single player earns from defeated enemies and bosses is also being boosted, making it less challenging to gather sufficient levels for the challenging encounters towards the end of your Expedition journeys.
I was wishing for an extended duration for the exploration phase and an increase in the healing flask charge as well, but regardless, these modifications are significant improvements that will likely enhance the single-player experience quite a bit. Even though I’m currently enjoying multiplayer, I recommend giving solo runs a try after Patch 1.02 is released.
