Showtrial boss confirms there’s already idea for “very different” season 3

As a seasoned movie buff with years of binge-watching under my belt, I must say that the second season of Showtrial has certainly piqued my interest. The anticipation for more seasons is palpable, and the promise of a “very different” third season has me intrigued.

Warning: spoilers for Showtrial season 2.

After a three-year hiatus, the second installment of Showtrial is now available on BBC iPlayer. Fans can rejoice, as it appears that the gap between seasons might shorten for future episodes.

During a Q&A session about season 2 of the legal drama, executive producer Simon Heath shared that they’ve got a concept in mind for a potential third season, promising it will be “quite distinct” compared to the latest episodes we’ve seen.

Initially, the creator, Ben Richards, was inquired if he might reintroduce any characters from season 2, given that the narrative of season 2 differed significantly from that of season 1, taking place in a separate city with distinct characters.

Richard suggested that it might be more appropriate to inquire about this matter from Mr. Simon Heath or Miss Emma Luffingham. It seems like a discussion that needs to take place, he implied.

He added: “To put it simply, the challenge lies in avoiding sounding cliche – observing some of the other performers here who’ve excelled in it, this production is truly an ensemble effort. The issue is, it would be tough to single out just one for a lead role.

“Clearly, the individuals in question are no longer present. I always enjoy their company, and I’d be keen to see more of them. However, it seems they may have left us with no choice but to let them go. Such is life sometimes.

Later on, Heath commented, “To be clear, it’s not a definite, but given the structure of our show, I believe having the ability to start fresh creatively is beneficial. We have an idea for a third season and an innovative approach to a murder case that would necessitate new characters. It’s possible that the BBC will approve both.

In the second installment of Showtrial, we find Adeel Akhtar portraying the character of Sam Malik, a lawyer defending Justin Mitchell (played by Michael Socha), a police officer standing trial for allegedly running over and killing a high-profile environmental activist.

Showtrial is available to stream in full now on BBC iPlayer.
