Showtrial confirms season 2 release date in trailer with Sherwood and Unforgotten stars

As a seasoned cinephile who has witnessed countless courtroom dramas, I must admit that I am both intrigued and excited about the return of BBC’s Showtrial. Having delved deep into the legal intricacies portrayed by shows like Raintown, The Good Wife, and even the classic 12 Angry Men, I find myself drawn to this gripping exploration of justice and human nature.

BBC drama Showtrial has confirmed that it will return for its second season on Sunday 6th October.

Starting from that date, you can catch the entire five-episode series of the legal drama (originally aired in 2021) on BBC iPlayer at 6am. The first episode will also be broadcast on BBC One at 9pm that very evening.

Episodes will then continue to air weekly in the same time slot for the following four Sundays.

In a newly unveiled 41-second preview, the launch date was officially revealed and introduced viewers to a group of new characters. Among them are Adeel Akhtar (known for Fool Me Once and Sherwood), Nathalie Armin (recognized from Home and Unforgotten), Michael Socha (familiar face in The Gallows Pole and Chernobyl), and Joe Dempsie (best known for Pieces of Her and Game of Thrones).

In the video (available for viewing in its entirety below), the scene begins by depicting the police arriving at what appears to be a significant incident. However, it gradually reveals the central mystery of the series: an officer (Socha) accused of running over and killing climate activist cyclist Marcus Calderwood (Barney Fishwick) in a fatal hit-and-run accident.

The official summary hints: “From Calderwood’s dying moment to the jury’s decisive verdict, Showtrial immerses us in the world of Justin Mitchell, a charming yet arrogant police officer (portrayed by Michael Socha); Sam Malik, a defense attorney with a knack for winning seemingly hopeless cases who is also anxious (played by Adeel Akhtar); DI Miles Southgate, a detective brought in from another jurisdiction to investigate the case (Joe Dempsie); and Leila Hassoun-Kenny, a tenacious prosecutor leading the charge against the accused (Nathalie Armin).

With public anger escalating, the show explores the question: What occurs when a trial becomes overtaken by societal rifts, and can the truth truly be discerned? Can justice prevail under such heightened tension?

Earlier, we got a sneak peek at the upcoming season with some initial photos that showed us a bit about Akhtar’s and Socha’s roles within the series.

Joining the cast of the series are Fisayo Akinade from Heartstopper, Tom Padley from The Lost Pirate Kingdom, Kerrie Hayes known for Blue Jean, Francesca Annis starring in Flesh and Blood, Nina Toussaint-White famous for Bodyguard, Zoe Telford recognized in Men Only, along with several others.

As with season 1, the show is created and written by Ben Richards.

Showtrial will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday 6th October.
