This week, we caught our first glimpse at the teaser trailer for Shrek 5, stirring excitement among long-time enthusiasts of the series. Despite some comparing the original Shrek to his new counterpart, it’s heartwarming to hear the familiar voices of Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey from the returning cast. Notably, Euphoria’s Zendaya will be voicing Felicia, the couple’s daughter in this film. Given the impressive roster of talents, many are returning to their roles that span over decades. However, with Shrek 5, there’s speculation about whether it will disregard the previous installments in this upcoming chapter. Some hints in the initial teaser have left us pondering the consistency within the franchise.
So far, only Zendaya has been confirmed as a new family member in the upcoming full-length Shrek 5 trailer that we haven’t seen yet. For those who remember Shrek 3 and Shrek Forever After, Shrek and Fiona had three kids: two boys named Farkle and Fergus, and one girl named Felicia. Interestingly, only Felicia is visible in the cast announcement, leaving us wondering where we might find Farkle and Fergus in this new installment of the series.
In the last two sequels, the triplet characters played a crucial role as they brought both tranquility and upheaval into Shrek and Fiona’s lives. The arrival of the kids caused a great deal of stress for Shrek, particularly in ‘Shrek 3’, where he was seen struggling with baby care in the well-known scene, and later in ‘Shrek 4’, where the strain of family life led him to make a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to regain his ogrehood. However, at the end of the film, Shrek’s decision to stand by his family suggested that he was determined to be a devoted father.
After covering this detail, it seems plausible that the brothers have yet to appear, either in the final trailer or perhaps they ventured off to college. This idea could be a reach since we’re unsure about the ogres’ ages, but it’s an interesting thought. Moreover, there are whispers that the movie takes place in a multiverse, which implies the brothers might reside in another dimension. Given Shrek’s fantasy setting and its capability to view memes of itself through the Magic Mirror, this assumption could hold water.
It’s disappointing not to include the earlier episodes in the story, particularly the other kid characters, but since Felicia is featured in the movie, it’s likely we’ll eventually see more of the Shrek family. As for when that might happen, it seems quite distant indeed.
