As an ardent fan of exceptional performances and character transformations, I am thrilled about the addition of Brett Goldstein to Shrinking’s second season. Known for his gripping portrayal of Roy Kent in Ted Lasso, Goldstein’s co-creating skills and acting debut on this show are a testament to his versatility as an artist.
In the upcoming second season of Shrinking, you’ll find that most of the original cast members return, but there’s a fresh face generating quite a buzz among fans – Brett Goldstein.
In the second season of Shrinking, which Goldstein co-created, he will be stepping into an acting role for the first time, portraying a character whose details are yet to be disclosed, having previously been recognized for his performance as Roy Kent in Ted Lasso.
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, another creator of the show, Bill Lawrence, recently disclosed that Ike Barinholtz (Goldstein) will portray a character quite different from his Ted Lasso tough guy persona. It was actually star and co-creator Jason Segel who advocated for Goldstein’s casting.
Lawrence noted that it’s common for people, at times, to confuse someone with the role they portray, which isn’t always accurate.
In my thoughts, he needed to be a compassionate, kind-hearted individual. Yet, in my mind, I found myself thinking, ‘No, Brett is more like Roy Kent.’ Then, I quickly corrected myself, saying, ‘What am I saying? He’s actually quite sweet and pleasant as a person.’
As a passionate film enthusiast, I found myself wholeheartedly agreeing with Jason Segel when he passionately exclaimed, “Hold on a minute, buddy! Brett should take on this role instead.” Without giving away any secrets, let me just say that the success of the show hinges on our emotional investment in this character. And, I firmly believe, Brett delivers an outstanding performance that truly resonates.
Segel mentioned that part of his reason for advocating for Goldstein to assume the position stemmed from his personal background as Marshall in How I Met Your Mother. He believed this role may have contributed to him being stereotyped in similar parts later on.
In a subtle reveal, Segel admitted, “I sensed, discreetly, that he yearned for the role, and I believed he would excel in it.” He added, “Given my background as Marshall Eriksen, I’ve honed the skill of convincing audiences to perceive me in different roles.
I think since he usually handles such situations as Roy Kent, I felt it was important to express, ‘Why not try something completely new instead? Let’s shatter this pattern.’ He’s simply outstanding in the series.
In the second season of Shrinking, there’s been a shift in the main cast as recurring actor Ted McGinley, who played Derek, has now been upgraded to a principal character.
