Dreams, an exceptionally ambitious game exclusive to PS4 developed by Media Molecule, was particularly cherished by Shuhei Yoshida during his time as the leader of PlayStation Studios.
In a chatty sit-down with MinnMax, I reminisce about my past trips to that creative powerhouse in Guildford, fondly recalling the times spent there.
As I reminisce, interacting with the folks at Media Molecule was nothing short of invigorating. Their creative prowess was palpable, making each visit an exciting event. Indeed, spending time with them was as electrifying as attending a concert by a renowned rock band!
When queried about his feelings towards the game Dreams, he offers nothing but praise, albeit expressing disappointment that it didn’t expand to other gaming systems.
Dreams was an extraordinary undertaking with grand aspirations… It serves as a fantastic platform for game development, and my hope was that it would eventually be accessible not only on PlayStation but also on PC and mobile devices. Regrettably, despite our best efforts, we weren’t able to make this vision a reality.
Instead of believing it’s solely due to poor sales, Yoshida explains that a combination of technical and commercial factors prevented the game from being released on additional platforms.
Initially, it was planned to develop both PC and PS5 versions of the game. However, it appears that the studio has shifted their focus to new projects.
As Dreams continues to operate online, Media Molecule has ceased providing live support because they are now focusing their efforts entirely on a new project.
It’s regrettable that Yoshida’s vision for PC and mobile platforms wasn’t actualized, as this would have certainly boosted its potential success. While Dreams is remarkable, if insufficient sales and technical hurdles were causing problems, we can sympathize with the choice to discontinue it, though it saddens us to acknowledge it.
