Some enthusiasts of the PlayStation 5 have expressed some dissatisfaction lately, feeling that Sony has been releasing fewer fresh games and more rehashes or updated versions of previous ones. However, it’s important to note that these projects are crucial for Sony’s in-house teams to continue producing unique titles, as suggested by former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida.
On the Kinda Funny Games podcast, Yoshida was questioned about common misconceptions or misunderstandings among fans, particularly regarding remasters. He mentioned that he frequently encounters numerous comments on this topic.
Yoshida comments on jesting about Hermen Hulst facing criticism for releasing too many remasters. He explains that those who criticize might be misunderstanding, thinking Hermen is only focusing on remasters instead of new projects. However, he assures that these remakes are being developed by distinct teams or porting teams, particularly for the PC version. Thus, he doesn’t believe that Hermen is compromising anything by working on remasters.
Yoshida goes on, emphasizing that a revamp or upgrade project tends to be more affordable to develop, generates extra income, and brings in fresh users for the intellectual property. This is particularly true when the game is transferred to a PC platform.
According to Yoshida, creating remasters, PC ports, and remakes can generate enough funds to continue investing in major titles. He explains that due to the high costs of single-player games, they require extra income from activities like remastering and porting to PC platforms to be able to afford game development.
He ends by suggesting that if critics who question the remasters appreciate the high-quality, single-player games produced by the first-party, they should support Hermen with his porting and remastering work, enabling him to continue creating such fantastic new games.
This generation has seen quite a few re-makes and upgraded versions of games, as well as Sony’s efforts to bring more of their games to PC. It’s not hard to see why people might react skeptically when they hear about remasters like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.
Indeed, Yoshida’s argument carries a strong logic. It may not be everyone’s preferred solution, but given the escalating game budgets, companies such as PlayStation must find creative ways to raise additional funds. This strategy is simply one of many means for the platform holder to continue delivering high-quality original software.
