Shuhei Yoshida, the former PlayStation executive who has recently stepped down, expressed regret that PSVR2 hasn’t followed in the footsteps of the PS2, where Sony significantly improved upon its initial product to create a more successful sequel. During an interview on Kinda Funny Gamescast (as reported by UploadVR), Yoshida seemed rather pessimistic about the headset, even chuckling when asked about PSVR2 and steering the conversation towards other topics.
After leaving his role as President of SIE Worldwide Studios in 2019 and shifting into the independent sector on PlayStation, Shuhei Yoshida probably had minimal – if any – influence on the launch and initial games for the VR device. The device wasn’t released until February 2023, over three years after his shift in focus, but even so, he expressed regret.
He apologized for his mistake, explaining that PSVR2 didn’t turn into PS2, instead they are two separate products. When Greg Miller questioned him about the confusion, Yoshida laughed it off and steered the conversation forward. When asked to share his thoughts on the hardware, Yoshida highlighted his favorite games: Synapse and Before Your Eyes.
Despite having dedicated fans, it’s widely perceived that the PSVR2 hasn’t been successful, with Sony not disclosing any specific sales figures and initially releasing just one game from PlayStation Studios, Horizon Call of the Mountain, on its debut day, suggesting a limited offering.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the third-party support for my VR device is solid, with games like Metro Awakening and Alien: Rogue Incursion being ported over. However, when these games are available elsewhere, along with exclusives that seem more enticing on platforms like Meta Quest 3, it’s not hard to understand why some might view PSVR2 as less appealing for VR gaming.
