Shuhei Yoshida to leave Sony Interactive Entertainment on January 15, 2025

As a long-time follower of the gaming industry, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and admiration for Shuhei Yoshida’s incredible journey with Sony Interactive Entertainment. For 31 years, he was there from the beginning, witnessing the birth of PlayStation and playing an instrumental role in its growth and success.

On January 15, 2025, Shuhei Yoshida, who has been with Sony Interactive Entertainment for 31 years and currently heads their indie division, will be saying goodbye to the company, as he has announced.

In an interview for the Official PlayStation Podcast, Yoshida stated that he will be departing from Sony Interactive Entertainment on January 15, 2025. He joked, “It’s like announcing the release date of a new game, something I haven’t done in a while.” [laughs]

He went on to say, “I’ve been part of PlayStation since its inception, marking 31 years with the company now. As I reached the 30-year milestone, I found myself contemplating a change. The company is thriving, I’m thrilled about the PlayStation 5 and the games it hosts, and we have a new generation of leadership that I esteem highly. I’m eager for what the future holds for PlayStation. So, in essence, I feel that PlayStation is now being steered by capable hands. It felt like my time had come.

Yoshida became part of Sony Interactive Entertainment, which was originally a division within Sony Computer Entertainment, during the time when it was still under the leadership of Ken Kutaragi, the mastermind behind PlayStation.

As a gamer reminiscing on game development history, I recall that two separate teams were working within Sony – Ken’s team handling development for PlayStation, and another team creating games for Super Nintendo under Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Fast forward to November 1993, these two teams joined forces, merging under Sony Computer Entertainment. Yoshida-san (laughs), being part of the team led by Ken and Sato-san respectively, shared that the fusion took place in a hotel, where about 80 of us gathered as a small yet passionate group, ready to shape the future of gaming together.

Yoshida’s role was to communicate with Japanese publishers and developers, often through phone calls and meetings, with the aim of persuading them to create games for PlayStation. Over time, he rose through the ranks and eventually became president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, now commonly referred to as PlayStation Studios. Later, he left his position to oversee Sony Interactive Entertainment’s independent game development initiatives.

Speaking about his time at PlayStation Studios overseeing major studios, Yoshida remarked, “Creating AAA games was fantastic, but during events like E3 or Gamescom, I always made a point to visit the independent game section. There, I discovered many intriguing titles and often had the chance to meet the developers showcasing them. I’d even snap a photo with them and lend a hand in promoting these games.

Regarding the future, Yoshida mentioned that although he doesn’t have any specific plans at present, his desire lies within the gaming industry where he hopes to continue assisting indie game developers.

“I have several events coming up. The Game Awards are happening in December, followed by the Taipei Game Show in January and DICE Summit in February since I’m on the board for those events. However, aside from these, I don’t have any set plans. I cherish my free time and would like to utilize it to assist indie developers or publishers whenever they require help. Therefore, I intend to continue supporting such creative, talented independent teams in the future.
