Shuri: Wakanda’s Hidden Black Panther

As a dedicated Marvel fan, I must admit that I was taken aback when Shuri stepped into the role of the new Chosen One as the Black Panther in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” However, delving deeper into the comics, it’s evident that her taking up this mantle is not without precedent. T’Challa has been the Black Panher since inheriting the title from his father, T’Chaka. Yet, considering Shuri as T’Chaka’s daughter, and given her intelligence, technological prowess, combat skills, and unwavering love for Wakanda, it’s clear she could make an exceptional protector of our beloved nation. Moreover, having fought alongside T’Challa for so long, her battle experience might just make her a more formidable Black Panther in certain aspects.

In the comic book “Black Panther” #2 by Reginald Hudlin and Ken Lashley, when T’Challa is severely wounded and falls into a critical coma due to an attack by Doctor Doom, it’s Shuri who is considered worthy to step forward in his absence and represent the Panther God.

Similar to T’Challa, Shuri was Brought up to Fulfill the Role of the Black Panther

It’s common knowledge that Shuri is T’Challa’s sister, but some fans mistakenly perceive her as solely a brainy character while T’Challa is seen as the athletic one. The Marvel Cinematic Universe emphasizes this sibling dynamic significantly. However, in the comics, Shuri has been portrayed as possessing remarkable physical skills along with her intellect. As early as Reginald Hudlin and John Romita Jr.’s Black Panther (2005) #2, the narrative indicates that she views herself as a potential Black Panther, and several members of her family share this belief as well.

Essentially, T’Challa and Shuri had spent their entire lives being groomed to become the Black Panther. T’Challa, being the eldest, was more advanced in his readiness, swiftly grabbing the opportunity to don the mantle without a second thought. If not for an unexpected mishap that gave T’Challa precedence, Shuri would have equally been ready to take on the role.

Despite becoming the Black Panther, T’Challa’s sister Shuri never harbored resentment or neglected her pursuit of greatness. Instead, she directed her energy into a unique realm—science and technology—an area in which none of their other family members showed much enthusiasm. After T’Challa ascended to the throne following their father’s demise, she dedicated herself relentlessly (occasionally causing him some discomfort) to help him become an exceptional ruler and protector.

Even T’Challa Recognized the Remarkable Talents of his Sister Shuri

In issue #6 of Black Panther (2005), Shuri’s unwavering loyalty to her brother and nation is vividly displayed as she single-handedly overpowers Radioactive Man – a feat that echoes her cinematic counterpart’s cunning while highlighting the valiance and combat skills reminiscent of T’Challa. This victory by Shuri, which played a pivotal role in eliminating dangers to Wakanda, is comparable in impact to T’Challa’s conquest over Klaw. Notably, Shuri achieved this feat independently, without the aid of a vibranium-infused suit.

Without a shadow of a doubt, T’Challa never harbored any doubts about Shuri’s capacity to lead and protect Wakanda. Post his encounter with Doctor Doom, instead of promptly returning to the throne, he opted for self-discovery. As portrayed in Black Panther: The Man Without Fear by David Liss and Francesco Francavilla, T’Challa, fully convinced of Shuri’s competence, moved to Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, seeking personal growth and rekindling his lost passion. If he genuinely thought Shuri was incapable of donning the Black Panther mantle, it would be highly unusual for him to undertake such a self-exploratory journey.

It turns out T’Challa was right about Shuri – she showed herself to be a formidable guardian while he was unable and on leave. In the comic “Doomwar” by Jonathan Maberry and Scot Eaton, Shuri repelled Doctor Doom’s persistent attacks on Wakanda. Furthermore, in the series “Avengers vs. X-Men,” written by Jason Aaron, Brian Michael Bendis, and Frank Cho, she stood tall as one of Wakanda’s brightest symbols of resilience during its conflict with Atlantis.

In Marvel’s Secret Wars, it was Thanos’ ruthless assault on Wakanda that made me witness Shuri shoulder a heavy burden and eventually choose to pass the Black Panther mantle back to T’Challa, who had regained his determination by then. Although her assuming the role of Black Panther in the MCU may have taken many by surprise, her impressive feats in the comics underscore her ability to carry out this responsibility effectively, hinting that she will likely continue excelling in this capacity within the MCU for some time to come.
