Sigourney Weaver is coming to the West End – here’s how you can get tickets to see her in The Tempest

As a seasoned theatre-goer who’s seen more than my fair share of productions, I must say that 2024 is shaping up to be an extraordinary year for London’s West End. The upcoming Shakespeare season at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, headed by the dynamic Jamie Lloyd, promises to be a spectacle unlike any other.

2021 has been a momentous year for theatre director Jamie Lloyd, with his Romeo and Juliet production featuring Tom Holland garnering rave reviews in London’s West End. Moreover, the limelight is poised to grow even brighter for this British visionary, as he prepares to spearhead a season dedicated to Shakespeare at Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

As a longtime theater enthusiast and film critic, I am thrilled about the upcoming season at London’s West End. Among the many productions, one that truly stands out is the brand new staging of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, starring Hollywood actress Sigourney Weaver.

In an intriguing twist, Weaver is set to portray the character of Prospero, a part that traditionally goes to male actors. Yet, it’s not unprecedented for a woman to step into this role; Alex Kingston from Doctor Who was the first actress to do so in a significant production last year.

In the wake of bringing The Tempest to life successfully, I am now preparing to direct Much Ado About Nothing. This time, the remarkable talents of Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell will grace our stage.

For the first time in fifty years, performances of Shakespearean plays will grace the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, with this upcoming double bill marking a significant return to the stage for the Bard’s works. Since 1957, when Peter Brook’s rendition of The Tempest featuring John Gielgud captivated audiences, there has been an absence of Shakespeare’s spoken words in this esteemed theatre.

Consequently, it seems appropriate that our Shakespeare festival kicks off with the very play, The Tempest, which will be staged from December 2024 through February 2025. This offers ample opportunities for you to witness Sigourney Weaver’s captivating performance in this classic story of forgiveness and retribution.

As a long-time theatre enthusiast who has been fortunate enough to witness numerous productions in the West End, I must say that this season promises to be truly captivating. The return of Tosin Cole with Shifters is particularly exciting for me since I’ve followed his career since his days on Doctor Who. And speaking as someone who appreciates fresh talent, Lily Collins’ West End debut in Barcelona is a not-to-be-missed event. It’s always thrilling to watch newcomers take the stage and make their mark. This season, the West End is offering an enticing blend of established stars and promising new talents – I can hardly wait!
