Silent Hill 1, 3 or 4 – Which one Should Konami Remake Next?

Silent Hill 1, 3 or 4 – Which one Should Konami Remake Next?

As a longtime fan of the chilling and enigmatic world of Silent Hill, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by Bloober Team’s take on Silent Hill 2. Their dedication to maintaining the spirit of the original while also making it more accessible for modern audiences is nothing short of commendable.

Initially, many people were hesitant about Bloober Team and Konami’s ability to create a genuinely good remake of Silent Hill 2. Given Bloober Team’s past work, they hadn’t yet demonstrated the skill level necessary for a studio tasked with remaking such a renowned game as Silent Hill 2. Moreover, Konami’s actions over the years had earned it a reputation for being unreliable among gaming communities. As a result, the skepticism surrounding Silent Hill 2’s remake in the years preceding its release was not unjustified. However, credit must be given where it is due.

The remake of Bloober Team’s “Silent Hill 2” is remarkable. It skillfully blends loyalty to its origin with innovative additions, creating a game that feels like an improved and expanded version of an excellent gaming experience to begin with. This remake not only preserves the original’s strengths, but actually enhances them, resulting in a survival horror remake that can proudly stand alongside other modern classics in this particular genre, such as “Resident Evil 2” and “Dead Space.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but ponder about the future collaborations between Bloober Team and Konami, particularly in the realm of the chilling psychological horror franchise, Silent Hill. While it’s not a certainty, there’s a strong possibility that we might witness another remake from Bloober Team within this series. The studio’s CEO, Piotr Babieno, has subtly hinted at this in an interview with Bankier, stating that the Silent Hill 2 remake isn’t “the end of the adventure with Konami.

With Silent Hill 2 now released and garnering broad praise (let’s hope it continues), if sales are strong as expected, it seems likely that Konami might approve another remake with Bloober Team. However, even if such a scenario unfolds, an intriguing question remains: Which Silent Hill game should Konami and Bloober choose to remake next?

Silent Hill 1, 3 or 4 – Which one Should Konami Remake Next?

It’s widely agreed, looking back, that remaking Silent Hill 2 was an appropriate first step for the series, even though it was the second game in the franchise. The remake faced significant expectations to thrive, as it wasn’t just a revival of a cherished and iconic game, but also the debut of a beloved franchise that had been absent for far too long (and hadn’t produced a genuinely great title in much longer). However, from a storytelling perspective, Silent Hill 2 might have been the most suitable for a remake, allowing the developers to make fewer changes. This meant they could focus more on improving the gameplay and technical aspects, while maintaining the narrative power that the original had.

In simpler terms, both “Silent Hill 1” and “Silent Hill 3”, originally released in 1999 and 2003 respectively, are ripe for a modern update by Bloober Team. Since these games have aged significantly over time, the developers will likely spend a considerable amount of effort on updating gameplay, design, audio, visuals, and other aspects. On a storytelling level, while “Silent Hill 1” and “Silent Hill 3” do have dedicated fanbases, they may not hold the same level of acclaim as “Silent Hill 2”. This could potentially give Bloober Team more creative freedom when adapting these titles.

Would a departure from the traditional approach in future Silent Hill remakes elicit skepticism? Given the studio’s impressive work on Silent Hill 2, it has certainly earned some level of trust. If Bloober continues collaborating with veterans who worked on the original games, as they did for the Silent Hill 2 remake, featuring Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka in active development roles, we might not object to them making changes in future remakes. We’ve noticed that deviating from the script in recent remakes can lead to enhanced experiences compared to the original games, and we hope this innovative approach will be applied to future Silent Hill remakes if they are produced.

Silent Hill 1, 3 or 4 – Which one Should Konami Remake Next?

Either one of Silent Hill 1 or would be a smart pick for the next remake, then, though of course, there’s an argument to be made that Silent Hill 4: The Room should also be in that conversation. That is, of course, the black sheep of the mainline numbered Silent Hill line of titles, but it is also the sort of game that is perhaps in more desperate need of improvements and enhancements than Silent Hill 1 and 3, both of which are great games already. Then again, for a franchise that has only just started its comeback journey, perhaps it wouldn’t be the smartest decision to remake what is decidedly one of the series’ least popular entries.

Besides the primary games in the series, Silent Hill also has several spinoffs that could theoretically be remade, including Silent Hill: Origins, Downpour, Shattered Memories, and Homecoming. While each of these games may have devoted fanbases, it’s hard to deny that they all have significant flaws. Just like The Room, it seems unlikely that Konami will prioritize remakes for these titles at this time, given their issues- and The Room is actually a numbered entry in the series.

Lately, it’s been rumored that Capcom is working on remakes of “Resident Evil Zero” and “Code Veronica”, following years of releasing one numbered remake after another. It’s only when Konami builds a strong foundation for “Silent Hill” that the notion of spin-offs and less popular titles being remade won’t seem implausible. For now, it’s hard to imagine Konami remaking anything other than “Silent Hill 1” or “3”.

If Silent Hill 2 proves popular enough to warrant a sequel, it would be wonderful if Bloober Team and Konami could continue their exceptional work on subsequent installments of the series. Fingers crossed for more unique creations from them in the near future!
