Silent Hill 1 Remake, f, and Resident Evil Requiem Are Leading the Survival Horror Charge

In recent times, survival horror enthusiasts haven’t been left wanting for games in this genre as there has been a steady stream of titles like the big-hitters such as Resident Evil, Dead Space, Alan Wake 2, and Silent Hill 2, along with smaller but still impactful games such as Signalis, Amnesia: The Bunker, Phasmophobia, Little Nightmares 2, and many others. These have provided some truly terrifying experiences. Though the survival horror genre is currently stronger than it has been in a while, it appears that its growth may not be over yet. This is because of recent announcements and reveals, it seems that survival horror fans can expect even more blockbuster games to come.

Over the past few days, three games have caught my attention: “Resident Evil Requiem,” “Silent Hill f,” and a remake of the original “Silent Hill.” Just hearing their names is enough to create a buzz, but there are even more reasons to get excited about each game. Let’s take a closer look at all three to uncover some of the most compelling reasons why they stand out.

As a dedicated fan of the Silent Hill series, I’m thrilled to share that we’re getting closer to experiencing the next mainline installment, Silent Hill f. This game has been in the pipeline since 2022, and this year, its marketing campaign is finally gaining momentum. The fantastic remake of Silent Hill 2, which ignited the series’ resurgence in 2024, paved the way for this exciting development.

From what we’ve glimpsed so far, Silent Hill f promises a unique experience in numerous ways, and there’s plenty to be optimistic about as we eagerly await its release.

The idea of a Silent Hill game not taking place in the town of Silent Hill might surprise many, particularly devoted fans of the series. However, this change could potentially allow Silent Hill to explore something completely new and invigorating when it releases in September. Instead of the usual setting in a Japanese town, the upcoming mainline entry is hinting at something different, with its horror elements closely connected to the new period location.

In simpler terms, Konami and developer NeoBards Entertainment have discussed at length how the upcoming game aims to combine terror and elegance in its art design and visual presentation. From what we’ve seen so far, this blend is evident in its creatures and various settings, and it seems to be effective in the game’s initial presentations. Konami claims that the new Silent Hill will be more action-oriented than last year’s Silent Hill 2 remake, which might worry horror enthusiasts, but we hope they can strike a balance without compromising on the scares, as everything else about it looks promising.

Indeed, Silent Hill isn’t the sole significant project in Konami’s revitalized franchise portfolio right now. As recently unveiled, Konami has also reunited with Bloober Team, the creators of last year’s acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2, to develop a fresh take on the original Silent Hill. Given their successful collaboration and the success of their initial project together, it was widely anticipated that they would collaborate again on another Silent Hill game. Given that Silent Hill 1 is either obviously or debatably the most likely candidate for the next game in the series to receive a remake, the official announcement has generated excitement regardless. However, it might still be some time before we see more of the game, let alone play it ourselves.

At present, details about the project are scant, as Konami and Bloober Team have merely announced its existence with just a quick logo unveiling – but if they’re using Silent Hill 2 as a model for this upcoming remake in the psychological horror series, it’s clear that many fans will struggle to hide their enthusiasm, including us without a doubt.

While Silent Hill isn’t receiving much sunlight, that’s for sure. For years, Resident Evil has been the leading representative of the genre, and it has been in excellent shape for quite some time now. So, it’s no wonder that the announcement of its next mainline title – Resident Evil Requiem, or RE9 unofficially, following up on 2021’s Resident Evil Village – has sparked such enthusiasm from all sides. It’s not just because it’s a Resident Evil game that fans are eager; they’re excited for a number of reasons.

Resident Evil is boldly and thrillingly promising, such as the return to Raccoon City decades following its nuclear destruction in Resident Evil 3’s finale, and the developer claiming that this game will mark a significant leap forward for the survival horror genre. Since its self-reinvention with RE7 in 2017, the Resident Evil franchise has consistently delivered one outstanding game after another, leading us to anticipate that its upcoming major release will captivate audiences just as impressively.

Additional elements contribute to the growing excitement about this game. The main character, Grace Ashcroft, is a fresh addition who might add a new twist to the typical Resident Evil protagonist. Moreover, she seems to have hidden links to the Resident Evil Outbreak series that long-term fans of the franchise will likely find intriguing. Early hands-on previews and reviews suggest a positive outlook for the game, describing it as a faithful survival horror experience that perfectly captures the essence of Resident Evil, with exploration hindered by items, an emphasis on complex puzzles, numerous scares, and yes, even a stalker enemy to chase you through narrow corridors.

In keeping with the tradition of the “Resident Evil” series, “Resident Evil Requiem” is expectedly not delaying its release, set for February next year. With “Silent Hill f” coming up a few months prior, and a remake of “Silent Hill 1” brewing in the background, it seems that the classic pillars of the survival horror genre have been rebuilt and strengthened once more. Survival horror enthusiasts indeed have quite a lot to anticipate beyond these three games, such as “Alien: Isolation 2” (or whatever its final title is), “Cronos: The New Dawn”, “ILL”, among others. However, it’s these three heavyweights that are generating the most interest at present. Here’s hoping that all three will live up to expectations when they launch, but for now, the excitement lies in their upcoming releases as a survival horror fan.
