Silent Hill 2 mods: How to remove fog and improve hair

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of scary games, from the original Resident Evil to the bone-chilling Amnesia. The Silent Hill 2 remake has sent shivers down my spine and left me sleepless nights, much like its 2001 predecessor.

The reimagined version of Silent Hill 2 is garnering widespread acclaim due to its gripping action sequences, challenging brainteasers that leave players scratching their heads, and its remarkable adherence to the chilling narrative of the 2001 game.

That last element, however, might be a bit too much for some gamers.

Revamping arguably the scariest video game ever made would naturally leave one’s hair standing on end. It’d be great if we could find a method to make the game less frightening…

If you’re playing on PC, it won’t surprise you that there are already mods that do just that.

In an attempt to alleviate the unease of navigating the eerie title town, I’d recommend lifting the fog, making it easier to see and move around.

There are plenty of other mods, too, that make all sorts of changes.

Let’s take a look at some of the best.

How to use mods in Silent Hill 2

First things first, how do we get the mods into the game in the first place?

Instead, take a peek inside the actual game folder for a look at its contents. After navigating to the Silent Hill 2 Remake folder, locate the “packs” folder within it.

It is in here that you’ll need to drag your downloaded mod files.

Check out the video from Deck Wizard below, walking you through how to do it on the Steam Deck:

Best mods in Silent Hill 2

With installation knowledge in hand, it’s time to explore some top-notch mods for the Silent Hill 2 remake!

Silent Hill 2 HD Collection

This mod’s title pays tribute to the Silent Hill HD collection released for the PS3. Its intention was to transfer the Silent Hill games from the PS2 era to contemporary gaming platforms, but fans were extremely dissatisfied. The main issue? The signature fog of Silent Hill was nearly absent in the ported versions.

In this mod, created by FrancisLouis, the same has been done to the remake. Download it here.

Hair Sheen Removal

There will always be strange complaints when it comes to games. Some people complain about frame rates, and others… don’t like a character’s hair.

In the reboot of Silent Hill 2, many gamers found James’s new hairstyle strikingly reminiscent of Leon’s from Resident Evil, which they felt was a bit too close for comfort.

To rectify that, Eggo has made a mod to remove the shine. Download it here.

Thomas the Tank Engine and CJ

We had to include the ones in the above instructional video…

It wouldn’t be a list of mods without San Andreas’s CJ, and Thomas the Tank Engine. The former made an iconic appearance as the cat in Stray, and the latter played a mean Mr X in the Resident Evil 2 remake.

How about this instead: Let’s merge these two worlds right here, pushing Silent Hill deeper into the world of dreamlike madness. Get CJ from the link provided, and also download Thomas the Tank Engine, both crafted by modders Iven and xZombieAlix.

2001 James Sunderland

If you’re longing for the classic game but hesitant about spending a lot of money on a used PS2 version, then this modified version might be your ideal solution. It could be just what you need!

Experience the game based on the initial 2001 design of James, navigating a 2024-styled environment. Get it from this link.
