Silent Hill 2 Remake Goes Above and Beyond the Original’s Toluca Prison – Here’s How

As a seasoned horror game enthusiast with a soft spot for psychological terrors, let me tell you, my dear reader, that the remake of Silent Hill 2 has left me utterly spellbound, and Toluca Prison is the pièce de résistance that truly seals the deal. I’ve traversed countless haunted locales in my time, but this prison level is a masterclass in atmospheric tension and immaculate design.

Horror stories come in a variety of forms, such as slasher, gothic, folk, dark fantasy, and survival (and many more, not counting their crossbreeds and variations). Regardless of their type, it’s interesting to note that the most impactful methods for creating horror are often surprisingly limited. One technique I particularly enjoy involves a psychological approach, focusing on detailing the horrors before they actually occur. The human mind, in its capacity to imagine, can sometimes create terrors that even the starkest of realities cannot match.

In Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake, it’s worth noting that the Silent Hill Historical Society plays a significant role. Towards the end of this segment, you stumble upon three paintings. The first appears to depict a seemingly ordinary prison named Toluca. The second painting describes a gruesome execution method. Instantly, something feels amiss.

Instead of solely focusing on the ominous title “Death by Skewering,” which details a chilling choice for prisoners between being skewered or strangled before death, let’s also consider the disturbing and grotesque imagery depicted. The third image appears innocuous at first glance, but its content enhances an unsettling atmosphere. So, what is this scene about? What lies ahead?

After that point, the main character, James Sunderland, encounters a gap. Earlier, this opening was missing or concealed, but now it’s reappeared, and the only option for progression lies beneath. Descending into sewer systems teeming with insects isn’t too challenging, considering what the paintings hinted at, correct? But as you venture deeper, towards the bottomless void, you discover Toluca Prison.

In case you missed it, the revamped version of Toluca Prison is downright chilling. It’s a nightmare-inducing, maze-like structure that leaves some feeling anxious and others annoyed. Whether it’s the best aspect of the remake is still up for debate, but there’s no arguing how captivating it truly is. So, what makes it stand out?

The story commences with James waking up in a chaotic-looking cafeteria, which feels like an unusual setting for him. Soon after, Eddie, visibly distressed following a shooting incident, makes a brief appearance before departing. As James ventures into what appears to be the guard’s office, he discovers a map with several cryptic descriptions: “Eyeless Boar,” “Headless Serpent,” “Scales,” “Gallows,” and “Rifle Cabinet.” Although the former terms might not be immediately clear, they set an ominous tone. Whether you have a map or not, it’s evident that something frightening lies ahead as James steps back outside the office.

A notable instance is what I refer to as the “switch dash”. Close to the watchtower lies a door that leads to Cell Block A. Unfortunately, the lights are out. Flip the nearby switch to illuminate the area, and it begins to countdown (for a moment, a mannequin appears before swiftly disappearing). The lights dim gradually. As you get closer to the cells, you can hear noises getting louder. With no other choice, you have to sprint through. You might assume there’s some terrifying creature at the end, but switching the next one reveals nothing. Even the sounds have ceased (momentarily). Perhaps it’s all in your mind (although it isn’t).

In another zone, there’s no clock ticking to pressure you, but it’s dark except for your flashlight’s glow. Your steps echo lightly at first, then change to a squelching sound. Every now and then, you hear a crumbling noise, but it might just be the environment. As you proceed, you’ll come across The Gallows, where two Pyramid Heads are depicted alongside a person hanging in the center. Upon finding out that you have to make a decision and stumbling upon the Scales (which open different parts of the prison as their weights change), the music becomes more intense, sounding like it’s about to tear apart.

As you make your way into the Serpent Wing of the penitentiary and manage to short-circuit the power supply, an ear-piercing alarm rings out. The area is filled with a blood-red illumination, offering little comfort, especially as the monstrous noises emanate. Eventually, you come across the contorted characters depicted in the second artwork – the Deceitful Figures – who release corrosive substance, posing a problem when combined with the Mannequins and their newly acquired wall-scaling abilities (yes, they can now scale walls).

As a devoted fan, I find myself immersed in an ongoing tension, even the Bobblehead Nurses joining the action. Upon my return to the guard station, I’m entrusted with the key to the armory, unlocking the Hunting Rifle for me. Yet, the threats persist as I make my way up to the second floor in search of the Block D key. Along the journey, I stumble upon cryptic notes hinting at something sinister lurking nearby.

According to a passionate declaration, “He’s breaking free from his bars and walls.” Later on, it’s disclosed that a mysterious illness is infecting the prison, causing the staff to grow increasingly anxious about identifying its cause, leading them to even consider extreme diagnostic measures.

These instructions will lead you through various sections of the prison to gather the required weights. When you insert the Executioner’s Lever, the structure will unfold, disclosing some testimonies that need to be sorted properly. Following this, James reaches the appropriate gallows and pulls it, causing it to drop via a hidden trap door, leading into the Labyrinth where events grow even more chilling.

Toluca Penitentiary stands out among horror game settings – it boasts a meticulously crafted, expansive layout enhanced by exceptional audio and visual design that seamlessly blends action and suspense. The tension steadily escalates, becoming increasingly unsettling as you unravel more mysteries surrounding the calamity that struck the prison.

Encountering these threats can be challenging, often necessitating the strategic use of your ammunition along with tactical melee attacks to preserve resources. Although it may occasionally startle you with sudden scares, it generally prefers to taunt you with what lurks beyond. It’s known for its patience, possibly observing, definitely creeping closer to take your life.

As a gamer in solitary confinement, I can’t help but appreciate another nail-biting example of tension: F6. Reading James’ letter, my torch flickers ominously. With a jolt, there’s a bang as something slams the door from outside, only to retreat swiftly. The game’s intricate details don’t stop there; it’s filled with subtle nods to the original Silent Hill 2, like hidden secrets that send a shiver down your spine. And nothing beats the harrowing approach to the Gallows when, after collecting all the weights, the once stark landscape transforms into a rain-soaked scene – a chilling reminder of James’ impending fate.

The over-the-shoulder camera sells all this even more, especially when you don’t know what’s lurking around corners. Its ability to frame certain sections in a new light while maintaining and expanding on the terror of the original is something to behold.

As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that I initially harbored some skepticism about Bloober Team tackling the remake of Silent Hill 2. However, they seem to have grasped the essence of what made the original so compelling. The design of Toluca Prison, with its strategically placed enemies and nostalgic sound cues, is just one of the many standout features of this game. If there’s anything that truly encapsulates James Sunderland’s descent into Hell and the ensuing madness, it’s this part of the game. Indeed, it might just be worth the cost of admission on its own merit.
