As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that both Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 have left indelible marks on me. Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 has been a standout in the tech department, particularly in the RE Engine era, and it’s gore system is nothing short of spectacular. The way the zombies disintegrate with damage and the morbidly gorgeous explosions of red when you blast an enemy with a shotgun from close range adds significantly to the gaming experience, especially in horror genres.
Throughout its journey, I’ve seen Bloober Team stumble a bit in the past, so it wasn’t too shocking or unfair to see skepticism surrounding their remake of Silent Hill 2 before its release. Yet, just as the doubts were valid, so is the torrent of praise that has followed. Now, with the global launch on PS5 and PC, Silent Hill 2 has proven everyone wrong and miraculously hit a home run. The survival horror remake has left critics and audiences awestruck, surpassing all expectations.
Without a doubt, when you receive a significant overhaul of a survival horror game, especially one as exceptional as this one, it’s only expected that it will be compared to 2019’s Resident Evil 2, which has become the standard against which all modern horror titles and remakes have been judged in recent years. Today, we’ll be discussing how Konami and Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake stacks up against Capcom’s contemporary horror masterpiece.
COMBAT AND BOSS FIGHTS
In terms of combat, Silent Hill has historically been weaker compared to Resident Evil, which excels in this area. To put it plainly, Resident Evil 2 outshines Silent Hill significantly when it comes to combat. The game offers a diverse range of weapons, with the unlockable ones adding significant replay value. Each weapon is weighty and powerful, contributing to an immersive experience. The gore system is impressive, making every action feel incredibly realistic, and the boss battles are some of the best in the genre.
Although the combat in Silent Hill 2 might not reach the same level of quality, it surpasses many people’s expectations. Similar to the original, combat isn’t the main focus in the remake, but the encounters against skillfully designed enemies make it surprisingly enjoyable. The boss fights have also significantly improved compared to the original game, adding another strong point to its appeal.
STORY AND STORYTELLING
To put it straightforwardly, when it comes to narrative and storytelling, Resident Evil 2 can hardly rival Silent Hill 2. In fact, Silent Hill 2 is often hailed as a psychological horror masterpiece, one that delivers a powerful and indelible story capable of both tearing at your emotions and sending shivers down your spine. The game’s heavy themes are skillfully explored through exceptional writing and, in the remake, extraordinary acting performances. Silent Hill 2 has consistently been ranked among the best stories ever told in a game, and the remake lives up to that acclaim.
Instead of focusing heavily on its narrative, Resident Evil 2 prioritizes gameplay and design. While it offers much for fans of the series, such as the iconic city of Raccoon City, characters like Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, and even favorites like Ada Wong, William Birkin, and others, its story serves mainly to enhance the gameplay experience. Compared to the depth achieved by Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 2’s narrative is functional rather than vice versa, showcasing a significant difference in their approaches.
PUZZLES
In this category, we find ourselves comparing games that are quite equally formidable: Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 2. These two are iconic, cornerstone titles in the survival horror genre, and they both place a significant focus on solving puzzles. Interestingly, the manner in which their remakes handle these puzzles shares striking similarities. They maintain elements from the originals but also introduce modifications to keep the experience engaging for both newcomers and returning fans, ensuring that no challenge feels too routine or predictable.
It could be argued that among horror video games, Silent Hill 2 stands out due to its emphasis on intricate puzzles throughout the game. Unlike Resident Evil, which often leans more towards action, Silent Hill tends to prioritize puzzle-solving, and Silent Hill 2 in particular features prolonged puzzle sequences that span significant portions of the game. While it’s true that Resident Evil 2 also includes well-designed puzzles, Silent Hill 2 places a greater focus on this aspect, as evidenced by its longer, more immersive puzzle experiences, much like how combat is more prominent in Resident Evil 2.
LEVEL DESIGN AND EXPLORATION
In terms of gameplay style, there’s not much separating Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2. They are equally impressive, and this is due not only to their high quality but also their shared design philosophies. Both games prioritize a methodical approach to exploration, urging players to carefully examine areas, revisit earlier locations, look for shortcuts, and other such strategies. The process of exploring in both games is undeniably captivating.
Resident Evil 2 outshines its competitors, likely due to a more effective distribution of rewards for exploration. From ammunition, health supplies, crafting materials, notes, collectibles, and more, players are treated to a wider and more gratifying assortment of items that encourage exploration. The game’s level design is also remarkably well-crafted, with the RPD building, NEST, and other areas demonstrating a high level of thoughtfulness throughout the entire gaming experience.
SETTING
It’s extremely challenging to separate Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 within this specific category. On one side lies the town of Silent Hill, initially appearing as a peaceful American town, constantly shrouded in a foreboding fog. This place is notorious for tormenting its inhabitants with haunting reflections of their personal traumas and past events. Its storyline and thematic depth, coupled with the distinctive visual style it embodies, make Silent Hill an extraordinary setting. The town truly shines at its best in the remake of Silent Hill 2, where it is brought to life with stunning visuals and exceptional detail.
Few horror settings could match what you’ve described – however, the exception would be Resident Evil 2, a game that stands tall in the genre, particularly in its setting. The RPD building, an iconic horror location, is brilliantly expanded and brought to life in the 2019 remake. Beyond the RPD, players can explore Raccoon City itself, another iconic locale (if not more so), as well as other meticulously crafted locations such as the grimy underground sewers of the city and the chilling Umbrella lab known as NEST. Preference for either game might be subjective, but considering its thematic richness and visual brilliance, we’d have to choose Silent Hill for its haunting atmosphere and unique concept.
ENEMIES
The roster of enemies that you cross paths with can make or break a survival horror game, and both Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 do a lot to impress on that front, and both games boast some of the most iconic enemy designs we have ever seen, from Silent Hill 2’s Pyramid Head to Resident Evil 2’s Lickers, among others. And though the narrative context surrounding them does give them an inherent boost, the enemies in Silent Hill 2 are also not as fun to fight as the enemies in Resident Evil 2 are, thanks to the latter’s strengths in combat- which arguably gives the latter an advantage in this area.
Analyzing the adversaries in RE2 highlights the game’s prowess in this aspect. To begin with, there is Mr. X, an intensely terrifying antagonist who tirelessly strives to instill fear into you. He persistently follows you for extended periods of the game, and the resonating echo of his heavy footsteps in the RPD corridors never fails to be unsettling. Additionally, there are the abhorrent Lickers, the grotesquely mutated William Birkin (and the various forms he assumes across the series), and even common zombies, which are some of the most decayed and eerie opponents we’ve encountered in a game. From their design to the distinct perils they present, as well as how captivating they are to confront from a gameplay perspective, the enemies and enemy types in Resident Evil 2 merit recognition.
SCARINESS AND ATMOSPHERE
A significant aspect that both “Resident Evil 2” and “Silent Hill 2” excel in for survival horror games is the creation of a terrifying atmosphere. While they may differ in their approaches, it’s clear that they are highly effective at making players feel scared. The level of fear can vary greatly among individuals, but these remakes skillfully construct tension and ambiance, keeping players on edge through elements such as strategic lighting, intricately designed settings, precise pacing, superb sound design, and other techniques.
If, however, we were to pick one between the two games as the winner in this category, Silent Hill 2 would probably edge it. The dark corridors of RPD, the shrieks of the Lickers, the unending pursuit of Mr. X- all of that stuff is undeniably terrible. But from the town’s oppressive fog to the narrative weight that it injects into the experience to the emphasis it places on slow, palpable psychological horror rather than conventional scares, Silent Hill 2 succeeds at delivering a much longer-lasting brand of chills.
TECH
Both Resident Evil and Silent Hill 2 games have excelled significantly in the technical aspect. Capcom has consistently shone in this department, particularly during the RE Engine era of the Resident Evil series. Similarly, Bloober Team has left an indelible impression with Silent Hill 2, a feat that is not unexpected given their consistent excellence over the years in this specific area. It’s worth noting that choosing between these two games would be a challenging task, as the difference is often minimal.
If it comes down to being picky about our choice, we might lean towards “Resident Evil 2”. While “Silent Hill 2” excels at replicating the eerie and ominous environments of its title town with remarkable precision and detail, “Resident Evil 2” stands out, even five years after its release. A key factor contributing to this is the exceptional gore element found in Capcom’s masterwork. From the gradual decay of zombie bodies as they take damage to the grotesquely beautiful splatters of red that occur when you execute an enemy in the head with a shotgun from close quarters, these elements significantly enhance the overall experience, especially considering the genre we’re dealing with.
OVERALL
As a gaming enthusiast, it’s tough to call this one even. While both Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 2 share many commonalities, they offer distinctly unique experiences that cater to different preferences. If you’re leaning more towards the psychological horror of Silent Hill 2 with its deeply emotional narrative, then it might be your preferred choice. On the other hand, if you’re drawn to the survival-horror gameplay of Resident Evil 2, you might find yourself appreciating that title more. Despite their similarities, each game offers a different journey, and the one you enjoy more will depend on what you personally seek in a horror gaming experience.
If you’re looking for a game that delivers a profound narrative impact and doesn’t shy away from unsettling players using both traditional horror tactics (which it has in abundance) as well as more thought-provoking and psychological approaches, then you should definitely consider playing Silent Hill 2. The story of James Sunderland is a gripping one that you really shouldn’t miss out on, and the remake by Bloober Team does an outstanding job at reimagining this tale while also enhancing the original gameplay experience.
If, however, the thing you are looking for is a more mechanically dense experience, Resident Evil 2 can’t really be beaten. Don’t get me wrong, Silent Hill 2 is no walking sim- far from it. But the pure survival horror gameplay on offer in Resident Evil 2 is unmatched, with everything from the stellar level design and gory combat to the excellent boss fights and, of course, the relentless Mr. X stalker sections coming together in perfect harmony to deliver a nonstop thrill ride. Personally, I tend to go for the latter, so Resident Evil 2 would have my vote. But for Silent Hill 2 to be in the same conversation as Capcom’s masterpiece is unbelievably high praise in and of itself.
As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I’d like to emphasize that the opinions shared in this piece are my own. They may not reflect the collective stance of GamingBolt as a whole.
