Silent Hill 2’s Original Director is “Very Happy” About the Remake

As a longtime fan and admirer of Masahashi Tsuboyama’s work, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia when I read his tweets about the Silent Hill 2 remake. It’s been over two decades since the original game was released, and it’s truly heartening to see the creator himself expressing excitement for this new take on a classic horror masterpiece.

The upcoming remake of “Silent Hill 2,” a collaboration between Konami and Bloober Team, is almost here, and ahead of its launch, there’s been an abundance of positive reviews. For a while, many had doubts about this remake, but the reception has definitely improved, even garnering enthusiasm from the original “Silent Hill 2” director himself.

As the director behind the original 2001 release of Silent Hill 2, I can’t help but feel thrilled about the upcoming remake! It’s not just that it overcomes the technical hurdles of the past, but more importantly, it offers a fresh chance for a whole new generation to dive into this chilling masterpiece for the very first time.

He noted that both games and technology are consistently advancing, leading to substantial variations in limitations and creative possibilities. This challenge is often encountered in media arts as a whole, yet preserving and understanding the ambiance of each era can be quite difficult.

I’m thrilled that the remake gives a new generation an opportunity to experience it. As its creator, this brings me great joy. It’s been 23 years since its initial release! One can appreciate the remake on its own merits, regardless of whether one is familiar with the original or not. The quality of the remake doesn’t change or impact the original.

As a gamer myself, I found myself criticizing the promotional approach for this remake. The points they’re emphasizing about its differences compared to the original aren’t quite hitting the mark for me. It seems like they’re missing what made the original game so appealing.

Tsuboyama commented, “The comparisons between the original and its remake, 4K resolution, photorealistic design, extra accessories, and so forth, are all underwhelming.” He wondered, “Who is this promotional material targeting? It appears they’re not effectively demonstrating the allure of the work to those unfamiliar with Silent Hill.

That said, he went on to add that the one key change that he is excited about is the new over-the-shoulder camera, which will significantly change the gameplay experience.

“The thing to note is the change in camera perspective,” he wrote. “The change in playable camera has a significant impact on many aspects, combat, level design, art creation, etc. While the impact on the story may be relatively small, it brings a big change to the play feel of the game.

It’s worth noting that Tsuboyama had similar criticisms about the stationary cameras in the original Silent Hill 2, finding them restrictive. He further expressed his hope that the updated camera system would enhance the sense of immersion.

He stated, “Honestly, I wasn’t pleased with the camera functionality from 23 years ago. The depth and angles were restricted due to the heavy processing requirements. It felt like an endless struggle without much reward. However, that was as good as it got.

Seeing the game from an ‘over-the-shoulder’ perspective really enhances the feeling of authenticity. To put it simply, this perspective makes me eager to test out the more captivating redesign of Silent Hill 2.

For now, the Deluxe Edition purchasers can play Silent Hill 2 on their PS5 or PC systems. The game will be released worldwide on October 8.

23 years later, I’m thrilled to see this classic game being remade for a new generation of gamers! Even if you haven’t experienced the original Silent Hill 2, you can dive right into this fresh take and enjoy it on its own merits. The success or criticism of the remake won’t diminish the legacy of the original; it’s just another chapter in its haunting tale.

🟥It’s worth mentioning that the shift in camera viewpoint is crucial. This alteration affects numerous elements such as combat, level design, art production, and more. Although the influence on the narrative might be minimal, it substantially transforms the gaming experience.
