As a long-time fan of the Silo series, I must say that season 2 has truly outdone itself with its gripping narrative and intricate plot twists. The first episode alone was a rollercoaster ride, taking us back to the tragic events that led to the extinction of most residents in Silo 17.
*Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Silo season 2 episode 1.*
In the arrival of Silo season 2, viewers have trailed Rebecca Ferguson’s character Juliette as she ventures into a different silo, uncovered the chilling reality behind Silo 17, and crossed paths with the mysterious character Solo, portrayed by Steve Zahn, who has joined the cast.
In Season 2 of the popular Apple TV+ series, we’ll delve deeper into the life of Juliette as she navigates her journey beyond her own community, following the shocking events from the season 1 finale. Meanwhile, we’ll also explore the uprising within her home silo and offer insights into the heartbreaking history of Silo 17, revealing the chain of events that led to its abandonment.
Silo season 2 episode 1 recap: What happened in Silo 17?
In the premiere of Silo season 2, events unfold that take us to a point in time preceding the incident, revealing the rebellion causing the near-extinction of Silo 17. However, it’s important to note that not everyone perished; there was one survivor – Solo, whom Juliette encounters at the episode’s close. Let me explain what transpired.
At the start of the episode, young Tim dashes off to deliver a message to his dad. This note from Engineering in Silo 17 warns that the generator will overflow in a quarter of an hour.
As Tim is escorted to safety upon his father’s command, chaos erupts within Silo 17 as a band of rebels instigate an uprising – successfully seizing the opportunity to leave the confines of the silo and experience the world beyond.
As the battle unfolds, take note of the name Russell, as it will turn out to be significant later on.
The band of rebels exultantly emerge from the silo, waving a green banner aloft – yet a sudden switch to the present reveals this same flag, now torn and frayed, amidst countless bodies sprawled across the ground outside the silo. It was here that the citizens of Silo 17 could advance but a few feet before succumbing to the poisonous air beyond.
What happens to Juliette in Silo 17?
In the present day, Juliette makes her way into Silo 17 and meets one survivor, Solo.
In the process of entering Silo 17, Juliette uncovers the lifeless bodies of its inhabitants. She navigates around them to descend into the silo. Unfortunately, during this entry, the adhesive on her suit begins to peel off. Pushed forward by urgency, she ventures deeper into the silo, gathering useful items along the way and encountering remnants of a past uprising. On what once displayed information, Juliette reads the defiant word “lies” etched into the surface.
Hurrying down the staircase with my helmet, I gasp for more air as it nears its end. Fumbling to remove it, I shatter the glass in desperation. Uncertain if the air inside is safe to breathe, it’s still a relief over the nothingness outside, and luckily, it seems significantly better.
Additionally, she pours a liquid (which resembles soup in the novels) as a last resort to wash away any harmful substances clinging to her attire. Before discarding it, she hastily removes the suit.

She explores the vacant Silo 17, discovering an overalls-like garment in one of its dwellings which she decides to put on, and also locates a water supply. However, it doesn’t take long before she hears an unusual metallic ringing, causing her to suspect that there might be someone else present.
To navigate there, Juliette initially attempts to traverse a sizable water-filled gap using a rope, only to have her attempt end disastrously (resulting in another close call with death for Juliette). However, she then proceeds to construct a bridge from scratch – all this, just to discover that the noise she’s hearing is merely an unused fan.
However, her being alone isn’t certain. All of a sudden, she picks up the faint melody of Audrey Hepburn crooning Moon River. Tracing the source of the music, she discovers a trail of figures, eventually uncovering a safe.
She fails to get the vault open, as a figure named Solo, observing through a crack in the door, warns her that opening it will result in her being harmed.
The episode also explores Juliette’s history, specifically the time when she left the central areas of Silo 18 to relocate to “Down Deep,” where Mechanical is found. Shirley and her family guide Juliette through life in Mechanical during this period, and she encounters Walker, portrayed by Harriet Walter, with whom she later develops a strong connection (fans may recall that it was Walker who ensured the proper tape was applied to Juliette’s suit before she went outside, thus saving her life).
In addition, the narrative delves into the uprising that occurred in Silo 18, where Juliette was born (Silo 18), many years prior to her birth. Later, as we journey through her childhood, Shirley reveals graffiti from the rebellion to Juliette and impresses upon her the value of self-reliance and the determination to survive, particularly when one is isolated.
She’s currently dealing with people, which is unfamiliar territory for her,” she explained to us.
She’s facing someone [Solo], whose identity might be unknown, but they could pose a risk, are completely unpredictable, or are there to assist and aid.
She continued: “And they create a bond, and that’s very unusual, but with that comes a lot of compromise and issues and very scary scenarios. So it’s not a machine, but actually a person she has to work around.”
How is Silo season 2 episode 1 different to the books?
In Silo season 2 episode 1, there’s a variation from Hugh Howey’s novels regarding the introduction of characters Juliette and Solo. Instead of being confined in a vault as portrayed in the books, this version shows Solo roaming freely within the silo before their paths cross. Here, it’s not the vault that reveals Solo to Juliette, but rather his theft of her knife and water that brings him to her attention.
He manages to slice her hand before she convinces him she’s not a threat.
In the novels, Solo appears slightly friendlier towards Juliette, avoiding an overtly menacing demeanor, and provides a touch more details compared to his on-screen counterpart.
Viewers might recall that the character portrayed by Walter in the series was originally an older man in the books, but has been changed to a woman in this adaptation (i.e., Walker).
Previously, it was stated by Showrunner Yost that the character development for Juliette on the show allowed her to gain a maternal figure.
