It’s close to five years since the judge of America’s Got Talent, Simon Cowell, faced a significant health scare. Back in August 2020, this seemingly nonchalant former American Idol judge had an accident while testing his new electric bike in his driveway and fractured his back. The businessman underwent spinal fusion surgery, had a metal rod implanted into his spine, and endured a prolonged healing process that kept him away from America’s Got Talent tapings for almost a year. However, he eventually made a full recovery. Recently, Cowell shared his first conversation with his surgeon following the accident, where he acknowledged that he may not have been able to walk again.

What Did Simon Cowell Say About First Realizing How Bad His E-Bike Accident Was?
As I eagerly anticipate the upcoming season of “America’s Got Talent” (originally delayed due to Los Angeles wildfires), it’s fascinating to reflect on a time when Simon Cowell’s iconic role as the Grinch-like judge wasn’t a certainty. You see, following his first electric bike accident that left him with a broken back, requiring almost an entire year for recovery, his continued presence on our screens was uncertain. Interestingly, he had another electric bike mishap in 2022, resulting in a broken arm. But, here we are, with Simon back and better than ever, ready to critique talent once again!
During an appearance on “How to Fail with Elizabeth Day”, the recipient of unusual (occasionally involving sexual themes) fan mail shared insights about the incident and its subsequent impact, expressing as follows:
“I opened up about my car crash and the aftermath of it.
We were required to perform X-rays, and my surgeon presented the X-ray image to me, leaving me exclaiming ‘Wow.’ He frankly admitted, ‘Simon, let me be honest. Firstly, I’m unsure if I can repair this, which suggests you might not walk again. And secondly, the surgery could take up to 11 hours. So, to put it bluntly, there’s a risk things might not go as planned.’ At that instant, I was taken aback, saying ‘Oh dear.’
Approximately six weeks post the accident, people started questioning if Simon Cowell’s injury might have been more severe than initially assumed, as he had largely gone off social media and was rumored to be dealing with significant long-term consequences despite his surgery being successful and taking just about five hours to perform.
From what he described, simply examining the X-rays following the injury gave him an idea of how severe it was. However, learning that the surgeon wasn’t certain if they could repair his back, coupled with considering the extended duration of the operation and the chance of complications arising during it, made the extent of the harm resonate in a strikingly realistic manner.
And it was then when the X Factor judge acknowledged that following the bike’s sudden launch, propelling him approximately seven to eight feet into the air after he accelerated and the vehicle performed a significant wheelie, he landed and concluded “I must have fractured my spine.” Cowell initially thought that since he could wiggle his fingers and toes, the injury couldn’t have been overly severe. However, he added:
As a devoted cinephile, all I could ponder on in that instant was my cherished kin and life’s essentials. It suddenly dawned on me that well-being takes precedence over everything else, and one shouldn’t engage in reckless behavior [Laughs].
Eric Cowell, now 11 years old, became extremely emotional upon witnessing his father on an e-bike shortly after the 2022 accident. At that time, Eric was roughly five or six years old and was present in the driveway, observing the incident as it occurred. Consequently, given the severity of his father’s injuries, it is quite logical that he would contemplate their shared future together.
Thankfully, everything ended up fine, and Cowell reiterated that he’s now in even better health than before, as he has become ‘more active’ following the mandatory physical therapy sessions and becoming more mindful of his sedentary work habits since the accident in his driveway.
