The incident occurred during the wee hours of the night, as Simon Mayo, a broadcaster and author, shares: “Sometimes I suffer from insomnia.” He attributes this to his past role hosting the Breakfast Show on Radio 1 (from 1988 to 1993).
A while back, I experienced a troubling moment, causing me to wake up during the night. In an attempt to calm myself, I picked up a magazine and enjoyed a cup of chamomile tea. As I was reading, I stumbled upon the term ‘grab list’. This is a list that firefighters refer to when responding to museums and galleries. It’s used in case of a fire or flood, and it prioritizes the works of art they attempt to save first. Upon learning this, I found myself thinking, “That’s quite intriguing.”
Not too long ago, I had an unsettling moment that woke me up during the night. To help calm myself, I read a magazine and sipped on chamomile tea. As I read, I came across something called a ‘grab list’. This is what firefighters use when they’re called to museums or galleries in emergency situations like fires or floods. It tells them which artworks should be their first priority for rescue. Finding this interesting, I thought to myself, “Hmm, that sounds fascinating.
By the time I returned to bed, I found myself pondering questions like, “Could the fire department accidentally save the incorrect artwork? Might someone have tampered with the emergency list? These thoughts kept me awake, as they were intriguing and required some mental processing.
I’m astonishingly dedicated to my writing craft: fitting in my eighth book among my busy schedule that includes hosting the weekday show on Greatest Hits Radio, my Sunday slot on Magic Classical, and my weekly movie podcast with Mark Kermode. (I manage it somehow? “I’ve been known to rise early even on Christmas morning to jot down a few paragraphs.”)
Lucky for us, his books are equally hard to put down, and “Black Tag” is no exception – it’s just as tense and captivating as his other top-selling thrillers.
It seems that instead of a physical manuscript, his most prized work (his latest masterpiece) is what he’d typically go for? However, considering that important items are now mostly digital, it would be those personal belongings he’d choose. Interestingly, despite several characters in the book pondering this “grab list” question, Mayo himself doesn’t seem to have a clear answer.
He hesitates, “Perhaps it’s a mug I received from my grandson Oscar for Christmas, decorated with his incredible artwork at the age of two.
On my shelf, you’ll find a Monty Python ceramic foot. It was a gift from Eric Idle for helping to get ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ into the charts while playing it on the Breakfast Show. I might grab that next. Then there’s my MBE, but I wonder if they could give me another if this one ever burns out. I’m not quite sure about the rules.
In 2021, the MBE was bestowed upon him for contributions to broadcasting. However, not everyone close to him, including his three grown children and colleagues like Ken Bruce and Mark Kermode, have shown appreciation for his achievements. He wonders if they’ve even read his new book, let alone congratulated him on this honor.
Instead of having friends in high places, it seems that he’s surrounded by influential figures in the film industry such as Ron Howard, Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, Cate Blanchett, Hugh Jackman, and Michael Douglas. With these directors and actors appearing on Mayo and Kermode’s movie podcast, he sometimes finds himself inclined to share some of his books with them when the opportunity arises during interviews with people who might find them interesting.
For example, I penned ‘Mad Blood Stirring’, a creative rendition based on the actual events surrounding the first black staging of Romeo and Juliet in Dartmoor Prison back in 1815. I handed a copy of it over to Steve McQueen, the director of ’12 Years a Slave’.
I had the opportunity to interview Chadwick Boseman, who unfortunately passed away around six months later. During our conversation, we discussed Shakespeare’s works, so I presented him with a copy. He was incredibly gracious and as he departed, he walked through the newsroom, turned back, and saluted me with the book in hand.
You can’t joke around with me like that. If I were interviewing Steven Spielberg, would I casually share my latest idea with him? Definitely not. But if he asked me directly, ‘Do you have any ideas?’ – then, yes, I do have a copy of Black Tag in my backpack.
As a film enthusiast, I generally don’t approach professionals in my line of work, but if the opportunity presents itself and someone shows genuine interest, I’m more than happy to engage. Just the other day on the Tube, I happened to share a compartment with Danny Boyle, and we had an enjoyable chat. If I had happened to have one of my books at that moment, I would have certainly offered it to him, saying something like, “Danny, here’s a book I think you might enjoy!
