This season of The Simpsons, a long-running animated series, has been introducing significant changes, and the latest episode took it a step further by reintroducing a character who last appeared almost a decade ago and has been absent for even longer. In recent seasons, The Simpsons has been experimenting with its episodes, and this trend continued in Season 36, featuring characters we haven’t seen for some time or fresh interpretations of familiar faces, even after years of being with them.
In the latest episode of Season 36 of The Simpsons, Homer and Grandpa Simpson collaborated on creating a fresh tale, this time around they dreamt up an entertaining new sport involving pool noodles to hit balls with. However, when the neighborhood lifeguards and children sought to utilize the swimming pools that Homer and Grampa had been employing, they were displaced and sent elsewhere. Interestingly, one of those waiting to use the pool was Ian, the Tall Man, a character we haven’t heard from in quite some time.
Very Tall Man Returns in The Simpsons Season 36
In “Full Heart, Empty Pool,” the 17th episode of Season 36 for The Simpsons, Homer grapples with the impact he’ll have once he’s gone, following a ban on constructing a pool in his backyard after accidentally damaging the town with a dug-up hole. Instead, he discovers an enjoyable pastime by bouncing a ball around an empty swimming pool. Eventually, his father joins in and they evolve this simple game into a full sport called “Noodleball,” which becomes popular among the senior citizens of Springfield as it’s easy on their bodies.
In a turn of events, the towering figure known as Very Tall Man reappears alongside other residents in their quest to utilize pools that were previously monopolized by seniors. When Homer advises them to dive into shallow pools instead, Very Tall Man counters with “Even giants need a place to swim.” This is the first time we’ve seen him since he was subtly featured in Season 28’s “Looking for Mr. Goodbart,” but it’s been much longer since we last heard from him, dating back to Season 9’s “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson.” This joke also references his very first appearance within the series.
Who Is the Very Tall Man?
In the much-loved Season 7 episode titled “22 Short Films About Springfield,” originally a one-time character, the Extraordinarily Tall Individual, made his first appearance. This episode has grown in popularity over the years due to the memorable “Steamed Hams” scene, but also because it introduced several new characters. Among them was the Extraordinarily Tall Individual who was teased by Nelson as he drove by in a diminutive vehicle. To Nelson’s surprise, this was actually a giant man trapped inside a small car. Given his financial constraints, this was the only automobile he could afford. Needless to say, he didn’t take kindly to Nelson’s mockery of him and his car.
Over time, The Simpsons has consistently referenced him in humorous background scenes, and his most significant spoken appearance occurred during Season 9 when Homer confused the Tall Man’s long legs for his own sleeping ones. Now that he’s back, it brings to mind a nostalgic throwback to the moment many fans fondly remember from years past.
