Simu Liu Breaks Silence on Shang-Chi’s MCU Return in Avengers: Doomsday

In one of Marvel Studio’s initial Phase Four releases, we were introduced to the character Shang-Chi in a captivating and enjoyable origin tale called “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” Ever since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for Shang-Chi’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie titled “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” hit the screens in September 2021. With favorable critiques, it managed to amass a global earning of $432.2 million, despite being produced at an estimated cost between $150-$200 million. Its success was notable considering the ongoing recovery of cinemas post-COVID-19 pandemic. Marvel swiftly declared a sequel shortly after its premiere; however, as of now, there’s no sign of this sequel, and it’s not listed on Marvel’s upcoming release schedule either.

With Liu preparing for his first appearance in the Avengers, work continues on Shang-Chi 2. Despite director Destin Daniel Cretton being occupied with Spider-Man 4 (scheduled for release next summer), Liu has reassured fans that the development of Shang-Chi 2 hasn’t been affected and he maintains communication with Cretton regarding the sequel.

Although Shang-Chi 2 is yet to arrive, it’s comforting to know that Shang-Chi’s narrative will persist in Avengers: Doomsday. Previously known as The Kang Dynasty, there were indications that Shang-Chi would be the main protagonist. However, after the conclusion regarding Jonathan Majors, Marvel adjusted the film to Doomsday, causing significant changes. The size of Shang-Chi’s role in Doomsday remains uncertain, but it’s reassuring he won’t be overlooked post-shift from The Kang Dynasty. Shang-Chi was an exciting new character in the MCU after his solo film, and fans have been anticipating his return. Here’s hoping that Doomsday will pave the way for Shang-Chi 2.

In the extra scene after the credits of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it hinted at an exciting future for Shang-Chi, as he met Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers with his friend Katy. It will be intriguing to observe how or if the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday continues this storyline. There’s a strong possibility that Shang-Chi could become part of a new Avengers team led by Sam Wilson, given his remarkable powers and abilities that would significantly contribute to Earth’s Mightiest. Even if Shang-Chi doesn’t play a leading role in this rendition of Avengers 5, he is expected to have an essential part. It wouldn’t be unexpected if Marvel chose to recall the bus fight scene by providing Shang-Chi with an opportunity to demonstrate his martial arts prowess.
