The upcoming release, titled “Drop”, is the work of director Christopher Landon, known for the “Happy Death Day” films as well as the “Paranormal Activity” series and this year’s slasher comedy “Heart Eyes”. This new project marks a significant departure from his previous works. “Drop” is a contemporary take on classic Hitchcockian suspense, seamlessly blending elements of our digital age such as social media, memes, smartphones (like iPhones), and AirDrops.
The story “Drop,” penned by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach, introduces us to a character named Violet Gates, played by Meghann Fahy. Following the tragic demise of her spouse, Violet has dedicated her life to aiding survivors of abuse, with a particular focus on caring for her young son Toby (Jacob Robinson).

Under the persuasion of her encouraging younger sister Jen (Violett Beane), Violet hesitantly consents to go out with a handsome photographer named Henry Campbell (Brandon Sklenar). Despite never having met in person, they had connected three months prior through a dating app and decided to meet for the first time at The Palate, an upscale restaurant on the 38th floor of a downtown skyscraper. The encounter commences amiably as both parties manage their shared apprehension. However, things take a turn after Violet begins receiving numerous mysterious texts on her phone.
Initially, the messages seem like annoying jokes, but they soon take a darker turn. They’re transmitted to her via Digidrop, a film equivalent of Apple’s AirDrop, meaning the sender must be physically present within the restaurant. Henry attempts to assist Violet in identifying the culprit, but without success. The scariest message arrives – she’s instructed to murder her date.
Straight away, Violet flat-out declines. However, when the enigmatic adversary reveals a picture of a masked henchman inside her home, she finds herself in a dire predicament – if she consents, it would mean murdering an apparently kind man who seems to have affection for her; if she resists, she could be jeopardizing the safety of her son and sister. The narrative then unfolds as “Drop”, a tale laced with mystery and suspense, follows Violet’s struggle to unmask her tormentor while simultaneously trying to outwit them.

The film “Drop” carries a nostalgic vibe, evident in its uncomplicated enjoyment factor and its playful absurdity. Some aspects may not withstand closer inspection, such as plot inconsistencies and minor timing issues. However, Landon skillfully keeps our minds occupied, preventing excessive analysis. Moreover, he leverages the talents of Fahy and Sklenar effectively. Their dedication and on-screen chemistry often strengthens the somewhat wavering content.
Drop” is an enjoyable and entertaining thriller perfect for a date night that doesn’t burden its viewers with excessive demands. It delivers straightforward enjoyment, and I can’t help but admire its self-awareness. Landon skillfully guides the narrative, while Fahy and Sklenar keep us invested in their characters enough to genuinely care about them. Although the movie may not leave a lasting impression, the fun you’ll have watching it makes the ticket price worthwhile.
