Director Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller remains a widely admired piece, known for its unique mix of genres and ideas. One of the film’s actors, Jack O’Connell, is among those lauding the director, labeling the project as one of his most enjoyable experiences.
Working alongside Ryan Coogler was an absolute highlight for me. The energy on his set is unparalleled, with him being hands-on every step of the way. His creative vision and directing style are truly inspiring. To put it simply, it’s a dream to work on a Coogler project. He’s always right there, by the camera, never hidden behind a monitor. It feels like he’s an integral part of the production. I can honestly say, I didn’t see him leave the set even once for a bathroom break. It’s just an amazing way to work, and I must admit, I’ll miss it. If given another opportunity to collaborate with him again, believe me, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.
In essence, Remmick is an ancient, solitary Irish vampire who strives to construct a substitute family using blood and music. O’Connell found some similarities between himself and Remmick due to his backstory. Coogler managed to intertwine elements of himself into the character, making him a convincing antagonist. As for the Irish dancing scene, he mentioned that much of it was already scripted, being precise and detailed.
The actor explained, “As a child, I was accustomed to doing that until I turned about six. Few people were aware of this aspect of my past when I was growing up. When I came across this role, I thought, ‘This character is tailor-made for me.’ So, in a way, much of it was predestined from the script. There were also some improvisations in the moment that Ryan encouraged.
1932 Mississippi serves as the backdrop for “Sinners,” a story that centers around Michael B. Jordan’s key characters, twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore, both veterans of World War I. These brothers seek refuge in the southern state from their troubled past, but soon discover that some of the seemingly friendly individuals they meet are actually cunning vampires concealing their bloodthirsty nature.
Sinners Has Been A Massive Hit For Coogler
In addition to Hailee Steinfeld (as Mary), Miles Caton (as Sammy “Preacher Boy” Moore), Wunmi Mosaku (as Annie), Jayme Lawson (as Pearline), and Delroy Lindo (as Delta Slim), the film Sinners has garnered massive acclaim since its debut. It has emerged as Coogler’s biggest success yet, securing the title of highest-rated vampire movie on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving accolades across the industry, even earning compliments from a renowned Oscar-winning director and acting legend.
As I pen this, the movie has additionally earned $175 million, surpassing its initial budget of $90 million. In the meantime, it’s been announced that O’Connell will appear in another high-profile horror film, taking on the role of villainous cult leader Jimmy Crystal. This upcoming production also features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes.
Sinners is currently playing in cinemas worldwide.
