Sinners Breaks Records, Outshines The Accountant 2 and Star Wars Re-Release

Over the weekend, the film “Sinners” broke several box office records, outshining the anticipated release of “The Accountant 2.” The latter movie, a follow-up to the 2016 film “The Accountant,” starring Ben Affleck as autistic action hero Christian Wolff, didn’t manage to claim the top spot due to an unexpectedly popular re-release. The original cast members Jon Bernthal, J. K. Simmons, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson returned for this sequel, but Anna Kendrick, Affleck’s co-star in the first film, was not present. The initial movie was a commercial success, earning $155.2 million against its budget of $44 million, despite a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In contrast to the second installment of “The Accountant,” which was released during the second week of Ryan Coogler’s horror film “Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan in a twin role, the two having previously collaborated on “Creed” and “Black Panther.” The cast of “Sinners” includes Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Caton, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. Despite its substantial budget, estimated to be over $90 million, the film made a strong debut, earning $48 million during its opening weekend in the U.S., displacing “A Minecraft Movie” from its position at No. 1.

Sinners Passed The $150 Million Milestone Worldwide

It Is Already One Of 2025’s Biggest Hits

Over the second weekend of its theater run, the film Sinners put on an impressive show, with estimates suggesting it would earn a total domestic box office gross of around $45 million by the end of Sunday. According to Variety, this would make it the top-grossing film for the second weekend in a row. Although it is likely to be dethroned by the upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts* during its third weekend, it is currently the first horror movie since Tim Burton’s horror-comedy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice debuted in September 2024 to spend two weekends at the top of the domestic box office chart.

In its second week in cinemas, the film Sinners has exceeded the $150 million global earnings mark, amassing a total of $161.6 million worldwide. This makes it one of only four films released in 2025 to reach this figure, with Disney’s live-action remake Snow White leading at $194.9 million, followed by Captain America: Brave New World ($414.8 million), the blockbuster adaptation of A Minecraft Movie ($773.3 million), and the Chinese animated hit Ne Zha 2 ($1.898 billion). Additionally, it is the 64th horror movie to achieve this milestone.

Sinners Set Multiple Records During Its Sophomore Weekend

Its Audience Hold Is Unprecedented

One fascinating point about the box office performance of “Sinners” is that its estimated decrease from one week to the next is only 9%. This places it in the runner-up position for the second-lowest drop in week two among R-rated films, trailing slightly behind the iconic slasher movie “Heart Eyes.” The latter, interestingly enough, experienced an unexpected surge of 19% during its second week, thanks to its release coinciding with Valentine’s Day weekend, a time when the film is set. Unlike “Sinners,” “Heart Eyes” had this advantage. Moreover, horror films typically experience significant drops in their second week, often by 50% or more. However, “Sinners” has proven to be an exception to this trend, making it quite remarkable.

In its second weekend at the domestic box office, sinners not only broke several records but also achieved some impressive feats. For instance, it secured the title of having the second-highest weekend gross for an R-rated horror movie, trailing slightly behind 2017’s It (which currently holds the record as the highest-grossing R-rated horror movie ever with a $60 million haul).

Moreover, this film set a new benchmark for director Ryan Coogler, marking his best second weekend performance not associated with a movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although it fell short of the earnings made by the two Black Panther movies, it surpassed both his debut feature-length film Fruitvale Station ($739,484) and the Oscar-nominated Rocky spinoff Creed ($14.99 million).

The Accountant 2 Earned $24.5 Million During Its Domestic Opening Weekend

It Roughly Matches The Original Movie

Over the weekend, the highly anticipated Ben Affleck action movie sequel, titled “The Accountant 2,” is expected to make a big splash at the box office. Predictions suggest that it will earn around $24.5 million in its first three days, an impressive start. In fact, by day three, it has already surpassed the entire domestic earnings of several major 2025 releases. Some of these include “The Woman in the Yard” (Blumhouse horror) with a total of $22.4 million, “Warfare,” co-directed by Alex Garland and produced by A24, with $24.1 million, Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller “Black Bag” with earnings of $21.4 million, and Jack Quaid’s action comedy “Novocaine” with a total of $19.9 million.

Over the first weekend, the new movie is projected to achieve almost the same earnings as the original film did back in 2016. To be specific, The Accountant opened with a domestic box office collection of $24.7 million, slightly surpassing the anticipated revenue for the new film. However, this could pose an issue because the budget for the new movie is reportedly $80 million – nearly twice that of the first one. If it maintains its current pace, it’s expected to earn approximately $154 million, but given its higher budget, its break-even point might be around $200 million. This means it may struggle to reach its financial goals.

The Accountant 2 Is Losing Second Place To A Star Wars Re-Release

Revenge Of The Sith Is Celebrating Its 20th Anniversary

Although it is performing decently well, the Ben Affleck movie is currently projected to lose second place in the weekend’s domestic Top 5 to the 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which is set to debut with $25.2 million. This does not seem to be the result of the newer movie’s reviews, which have earned it a Certified Fresh 79% Rotten Tomatoes score. The 147 aggregated reviews include one from ScreenRant‘s own Graeme Guttman, who gave it a score of 7 out of 10. Read an excerpt from his The Accountant 2 review below:

If you’re expecting a typical, run-of-the-mill action film when you step into this one, you might be let down. However, if – like me – you appreciated the quirky vibe of the initial movie and didn’t mind its lighter action sequences, then I have some pleasant news for you!

In a parallel situation, both the Star Wars and The Accountant franchises have experienced cinematic pauses, with no new Star Wars film hitting theaters since 2019’s Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Conversely, The Accountant 2 is part of a series that hasn’t had the opportunity to cultivate a dedicated fanbase due to the nine-year gap following its initial release. Despite this gap mirroring the original film’s opening weekend performance, indicating that it continues to resonate with its core audience, it appears that neither it nor The Accountant 1 could match the popularity of the legendary Star Wars franchise or the terrifyingly successful horror movie, Sinners.
