Sinners Ending and Post-Credits Scene Revealed: What’s Next for the Heroes?

Prior to its release, Ryan Coogler’s latest movie, “Sinners,” was highly praised by critics; moreover, its successful debut weekend at the box office has solidified its status as a crowd-pleaser too, making it a significant success among both critics and audiences.

In this transformed production, a period drama, musical, and vampire flick, Michael B Jordan delivers an outstanding dual portrayal as brothers Smoke and Stack. Notably, Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, and Hailee Steinfeld have all received acclaim for their respective performances in the film.

Additionally, a notable feature of the movie that has struck a chord with viewers is its music. The film’s score, created by Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, is one of the year’s best. Moreover, the soundtrack features some powerful blues performances delivered by the cast members themselves.

As for the storyline of the movie, I assume you’re already in the know that it initially appears to be a realistic drama, but then veers into the realm of the supernatural, culminating in a thrilling final act with the appearance of vampires. To add to the intrigue, a puzzling scene during the credits provides more ambiguity.

If you’ve watched the movie and are curious about the last scenes, keep reading as we delve into an explanation of the ending of Sinners – please be aware that significant spoilers lie ahead.

Sinners ending explained: What happens to Smoke and Stack?

Following the infiltration of the juke joint by a massive group of vampires, an intense fight breaks out, resulting in numerous casualties among those who had not yet been transformed. Notable losses include Grace (Li Jun Li), Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), and Slim (Delroy Lindo), with Slim making the ultimate sacrifice.

Annie’s demise follows a fatal bite, with Smoke (Michael B Jordan) ending her life in accordance with a prior agreement that they wouldn’t turn into vampires. Notably, the vampires Stack and Mary show sorrow over this loss, and Mary, specifically, is depicted as consoling herself by smoking a joint.

Eventually, only Smoke (Miles Caton), Sammie, and Pearline (Jayme Lawson) are left. Smoke engages in a struggle with his brother, the outcome of which is purposely ambiguous. Meanwhile, Pearline and Sammie encounter the lead vampire Remmick (Jack O’Connell). In this confrontation, Pearline gets bitten and Sammie escapes.

After the fight, Sammie steps out and confronts Remmick by playing his guitar aggressively. Meanwhile, Smoke impales Remmick with a stake, wrapping up the conflict. The rest of the group, now destroyed, is reduced to ashes as the dawn’s rising sun incinerates them.

However, though the vampires have vanished, another more ominous threat emerges: the Ku Klux Klan members, spearheaded by landowner Hogwood, who suddenly make an appearance with the intention of destroying everything. Smoke confronts them alone, managing to eliminate all of them, but he ultimately perishes from a wound sustained during the fight – experiencing a vision of Annie and their deceased daughter before his demise.

Later on, we find ourselves revisiting the scenes from the beginning of the movie, where the tormented Sammie re-enters his father’s church. There, he is urged to abandon “the devilish tunes,” yet he remains firm and departs with his guitar in hand.

What happens in the Sinners post-credits scene?

60 years later in the post-credits sequence, we find that the character Sammie, originally played by you, has become a highly accomplished musician, with Blues legend Buddy Guy portraying an older version of him.

The setting is Sammie’s personal Chicago blues tavern. Here, we find Stack and Mary paying a visit, looking as if no time has passed since our previous encounter, despite their clothing being fitting for the era.

Stack conveys that Smoke had opted not to harm him back then at the juke joint, years ago, yet his liberty hinged upon a single stipulation: allowing Sammie to coexist tranquilly.

Additionally, they offer Sammie eternal life, an offer he declines, followed by him performing a song for them. Towards the end of the scene, he looks back on the night at the juke joint and shares that despite the distressing incidents of that evening, he considers the day preceding it as the best in his life.

In response to what he said, Smoke concurs, sharing that this encounter was not only their last meeting but also the final time he saw the sunrise – a unique instance throughout his life when he truly experienced freedom.

Will there be a Sinners sequel?

Before its release, there were whispers that Coogler planned for the movie to be the start of a new series, and the closing scene hints strongly that there may be additional tales set in this universe if the screenwriter/director decides to continue down this path.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must admit that lately, Coogler has been rather tight-lipped about the prospect of a sequel. In an interview with EBONY, he shared his thoughts: “Sequels and franchise films have occupied my creative space for some time now, so I’ve found myself yearning to step away from that.

Furthermore, he mentioned that viewers should not automatically interpret the credit scene as a hint for another movie.

He clarified that he envisioned the movie as a complete dining experience: starting with appetizers, moving through main courses, and ending with desserts. He wanted every part of it to be present, making it a cohesive and finished product. This is what he was asked about and what his intention had always been.

During an interview with GamesRadar+, Michael B. Jordan expressed his willingness to reprise his role if a sequel is made, but emphasized that Ryan Coogler makes the final decisions.

Currently, it appears that there’s no immediate plan for a follow-up to the Sinners series, yet things can always shift and evolve over time. Keep an eye out for updates!
