Sinners Leaving IMAX Screens This May as Marvel’s Thunderbolts Takes Over Theaters!

Starting from May 1, 2025, Ryan Coogler’s highly successful vampire epic, Sinners, will no longer be showing in certain theaters because a new major movie is being released. This film, directed by the acclaimed director of Black Panther, has been one of Hollywood’s biggest success stories this year, with its captivating vampire storyline and a talented cast featuring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld.

With Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts” now showing in cinemas, the film “Sinners” is preparing to leave the big screen as it gets removed from IMAX screens worldwide after only two complete weeks of screening in the premium format.

This doesn’t imply that Sinners will instantly vacate cinemas completely, but it is a substantial advance on the film’s theatrical debut. Director Ryan Coogler’s latest creation may continue to be screened in theaters for several months, with its theatrical performance potentially wrapping up around late June or early July (akin to another recent release, Minecraft)).

This transition from IMAX is common for films screened in Premium Large Format (PLF) theaters, as their IMAX showings usually run for just a few weeks. The departure of Sinners from IMAX theaters is mostly due to Marvel Studios’ upcoming film, Thunderbolts*, requiring PLF screens. At this moment, Coogler’s vampire-themed blockbuster is using those screens.

Fundamentally, the length of time a movie stays in theaters is usually determined by its ongoing success. In this case, the film “Sinners” has been particularly successful.

In a similar vein to recent blockbusters such as “Wicked” and “Twisters,” it appears that “Sinners” may have a run of approximately 12 weeks in theaters before wrapping up, based on current trends.

Contrary to early expectations suggesting caution towards the movie due to its unique premise and R-rating, it has astonishingly outperformed predictions. For its debut fortnight, it claimed the top position at the worldwide box office and experienced one of the smallest week-to-week percentage declines for a significant film release in recent years.

According to reports from insiders, the movie is performing exceptionally well and could potentially surpass Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” as the highest-grossing original live-action film in the U.S. since 2013. 1930s Mississippi serves as the backdrop for “Sinners“, a tale centered around two siblings returning home to establish a juke joint. Yet, when their blues night transcends the boundary between day and night, they, along with their companions, find themselves in peril from a pack of ravenous vampires who crave human flesh.

Under the guidance of Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld, and helmed by Ryan Coogler, who is known for his work on Black Panther, this film has been one of the most acclaimed releases of the year. When Will Sinners Come to Streaming?

Without a doubt, moving beyond the long-term run of Sinners, the question that naturally arises is: When can we expect Ryan Coogler’s chilling horror from the Deep South to hit our streaming platforms?

As of now, I haven’t come across any specific streaming details for the movie, but I’m optimistic that we’ll be able to stream it at some point post its theater run.

Normally, newly released Warner Bros. films become available for premium video-on-demand (PVOD) rental before they’re added to streaming platforms. This transition typically occurs approximately one month following their initial release in theaters.

It’s likely that the Premium Video On Demand (PVOD) release of “Sinners” will occur around late May, becoming available on platforms such as Google Play, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video.

Only after that has happened will a streaming release start to be explored. 

It’s highly likely that, as “Sinners” is a Warner Bros. production, it will likely be streamed on the Max platform, which is owned by Warner, thereby joining popular titles like “Minecraft” and “Barbie” among others on this service.

Streaming dates can be harder to predict, but that does not mean they are impossible.

Over the past few years, major releases from Warner Bros. have typically become available for streaming between 100 and 150 days after their initial release, with the highest-grossing films often waiting closer to the maximum end of this timeframe.

A suitable analogy could be the movie “Barbie” from 2023, which experienced an extraordinary success at the box office (surpassing the current level of “Sinners”). The film premiered in July of 2023 and was made available on Max after a delay of 147 days, debuting on the streaming platform in December of the same year.

If “Sinners” persists on its current path, I foresee a possible adaptation of the theatrical-to-streaming model, which would delay its streaming debut to late August or early September. As a movie enthusiast, I eagerly await its arrival!
