Audience members who flocked to cinemas to experience this dark vampire tale can’t help but share their thoughts on social media following their viewing. The film has ignited numerous discussions, with the main topic being who’s responsible for the more heartrending scenes. It’s a complex argument, but there’s a definitive answer regarding who caused the chaos in “Sinners“.

Similar to many horror films, Sinners portrays its characters making unusual decisions. Since few people expect to encounter a vampire in real life, their reactions can be unpredictable when they do meet one. Consequently, it’s understandable that some characters should be given a bit of leniency, particularly those who find themselves caught in difficult situations.

Grace & Mary Are Victims of Circumstance

In the debate over characters who make missteps in the film “Sinners“, Mary and Grace are often mentioned. Grace, being emotionally tied to her husband, loses control when Remmick, the chief vampire, threatens their child. As for Mary, she transforms into a vampire after engaging with Remmick’s group outside, leading to the death of Stack. Despite their mistakes, both characters have good intentions at heart, which is significant in a film like “Sinners“.

Mary deeply yearns to be accepted by Stack and the entire community at the juke joint, as they’ve been like family to her since childhood. When she sees them struggling and in need of aid, her eagerness to help quickly surfaces. For perhaps the first time in her life, she feels that her being white might benefit her Black friends, despite skepticism from some who think she should have stayed out of it. However, the film suggests that Stack approves of her actions from the start and wishes to welcome Remmick’s group into their midst. Essentially, Mary’s role is more about being a supportive ally rather than trying to act as a white savior or hiding things from others.

Regarding Grace, it’s often the case that the one who invites trouble ends up in a tough spot, but it’s not easy to fault her. The group staying at the juke joint decided to hold out against the vampires until dawn, reasoning that if daybreak arrived, the monsters would likely have departed, seeking their next chance to attack. Seizing the opportunity to eliminate them on the spot was a wise move, although Grace could have communicated her plan more tactfully.

Sammie’s Heart Is Always in the Right Place

In a different rendition, we find Sammie under fire online, urged by cousins Stack and Smoke to perform at their juke joint. His father, a preacher, consistently warns him against pursuing music, claiming it invites trouble. Once Remmick learns of his skills, he’s ready for confrontation. However, the notion that Sammie might give up or be controlled by others is misguided. He remains steadfast, never letting go of the guitar and asserting control over his own destiny, even in the face of a formidable vampire threat.

There’s Only One Character to Blame for the Events of Sinners

The consistent element in Mary, Grace, and Sammie’s narratives is that Remmick consistently attempts to control them, making him the sole figure deserving of criticism. He desires to amass talent for himself and employs any tactic he conceives to acquire it. Remmick is also skilled at pressing people’s vulnerabilities, as demonstrated during his encounter with Smoke, where he and Stack unveil the KKK’s scheme to demolish the juke joint. When a villain never spares anyone, assigning blame to others becomes challenging.

As a cinephile, I’ve got to admit that there are scenes in the movie “Sinners” that might make you want to tug at your own hair in frustration. But let me tell you, each of those moments is like a carefully placed brick, building up towards an explosive climax. You see, if every character stuck rigidly to the rules, this film wouldn’t be nearly as captivating. The characters in “Sinners” are far from perfect, and that’s exactly what makes them so intriguing.
