It has been announced that the drama will air on television this coming spring, and a collection of fresh photos hints at significant conflict, while also providing viewers with their initial look at Siobhan Finneran (from Happy Valley) portraying the main character, Detective Inspector Liz Nyles.
In the same vein, Katherine Kelly (from Mr Bates vs The Post Office) and Nadine Marshall (Champion) can be observed playing their respective roles. Katherine’s character is depicted at a crime scene, engaging in conversation with an officer present, whereas Nadine’s character appears anxious in a dimly lit room, accompanied by Finneran.
Titled as a “thriller that explores the consequences when the secretive and ethically ambiguous witness protection program falters”, Protection draws inspiration from a genuine witness protection officer who spent three decades serving with the Metropolitan Police and has additionally functioned as a consultant for the series.
Based on the show’s summary, Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (played by Finneran) is a single mother dealing with a tough divorce and an ill parent. She becomes entangled in a significant security issue that arises within her witness protection unit.
The summary goes on: “She’s been tainted professionally due to a clandestine relationship with a coworker. However, she remains steadfast in her pursuit of exposing the genuine origin of police corruption.
Liz is determined to go to any length necessary, ensuring her own redemption, protecting the reputation of her partner, and safeguarding both her witnesses and her family. If it requires bending or even breaking the rules, she is prepared to do so.
As I delve deeper into this narrative, I find myself portrayed as a hardened yet gradually more solitary police officer. Unbeknownst to me, I’m being drawn into a perilous web of deceit, a conspiracy so complex that the lines between truth and illusion begin to blur.
The following actors have been added to the series: Barry Ward from Bad Sisters, Chaneil Kular known for Sex Education, David Hayman famous for Sid and Nancy, Nichola Burley of The Gold, and Akiya Henry who appears on Silent Witness.
The series was first unveiled as early as September 2023. It hails from the esteemed production house, New Pictures, recognized for their exceptional work on productions such as The Long Shadow, Des, and White House Farm.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement over the creation of “Protection,” a gripping conspiracy thriller penned by the esteemed Kris Mrksa. In his own words, he described it as a tale that delves into the realms of suspense and intrigue, yet simultaneously tackles profound moral quandaries. The question at its core: How far are we willing to go in pursuit of the greater good?
In the shrouded realm of witness protection programs, where notorious offenders frequently find refuge with the expectation of aiding in the apprehension of additional wrongdoers, offers an ideal setting to delve into these complex matters.
I’m absolutely thrilled to collaborate with the team at New Pictures once more, as we breathe life into this intricate universe.
