As a seasoned observer of human dynamics, I find myself deeply moved by the stories unfolding within this unique family. Each member seems to be grappling with their own truths and finding solace in their paths towards self-discovery.
Sister Wives patriarch Kody Brown wouldn’t mind if any of his kids said “I do” to plural marriage.
Despite currently being married monogamously to his fourth spouse, Robyn Brown, Kody Brown from the TLC show hinted during the Dec. 15 episode that he wouldn’t object if any of his children chose a plural marriage. He emphasized, however, that he would caution them about potential pitfalls.
He hopes that his family members will not become deeply involved with the church they used to belong to, which was the Apostolic United Brethren.
As a devoted follower, I’ll share a unique tale about our congregation. It was essentially a spiritual separation for individuals who once belonged to or were connected with the LDS church. Yet, what sets us apart is our belief system, which includes a doctrine known as plural marriage. This isn’t just a suggestion or a choice; it’s a commandment that those aspiring to advance through eternity must adhere to.
For Kody, the rules against polygamy didn’t deter him, as he pointed out that when the church considered him for a leadership role, it was his distinctive feature – his wavy hair – that raised concerns.
He regretted that they perceived his hairstyle as defiant, and he responded, “‘Kody, you should consider cutting your hair.’ I object to being instructed on matters not dictated by law or religion. I don’t wish to be involved in anything resembling a cult.
Which is why, he said, he wouldn’t “be very fond” of any of his kids revisiting their old religion.
Despite both Aurora Brown, aged 22, and her younger sister Breanna Brown, 19 – Kody’s eldest daughters with Robyn – having expressed an interest in finding a church where the men share similar life goals as Breanna mentioned on the Dec 8 episode, Kody doesn’t believe that a married man is what they are seeking.
He shared his thoughts, saying to the cameras, “I doubt any of my children will engage in a polygamous lifestyle. It’s conceivable if one of my daughters were interested in marrying a man who is already married. However, I believe their upbringing with our family wouldn’t encourage them to choose such a path.
Speaking honestly, the individual who is well-known for advocating that love should grow rather than lessen, expressed his disinterest in his daughters being part of plural marriages. Similarly, he believes none of his sons have an inclination towards plural marriages either.
Because, so far, the Brown offspring haven’t found one to be the loneliest number.
In 2016, Janelle’s daughter Madison Brush got married to her husband Caleb Brush, followed by Christine’s daughter Mykelti Padron tying the knot with Tony Padron later that year. Christine’s eldest daughter Aspyn Thompson wed Mitch Thompson in 2018, while Janelle’s eldest child Logan Brown married Michelle Petty in 2022. The same year, Meri’s child Leon Brown quietly exchanged vows with Audrey Kriss at a Colorado courthouse.
Most recently, Gwendyln Queiroz held her nuptials to Beatriz Queiroz last year.
As for Kody, he’s also found a new appreciation for monogamy as of late.
During the December 1st episode, he shared his feelings: “I have no desire to practice polygamy again.” He explained that since discussing it with his brothers, he realized polygamy hinders emotional intimacy. It creates a defensive atmosphere, and he yearns for an emotionally open, intimate relationship with a woman, which is difficult to achieve in a polygamous setup.
Absolutely, t I myself can confirm that there are more secrets they’ve shared this season. Stay tuned to discover all their recent confessions.)
Kody Brown expressed his intention to part ways with his first wife, Meri Brown, not long after they exchanged vows in 1990. However, as he often did, Kody gave her hope that things could improve by saying, “Meri, when we move to Flagstaff, this will be a fresh start for us.” This was a recurring pattern over many years, according to Meri. She shared this sentiment during the premiere on September 15, reminiscing about their move in 2018.
She expressed her primary concern as being his poor communication, specifically his failure to express genuinely how he feels, what he desires or doesn’t desire, and the narrative he has been conveying over the years.
Kody admitted there might have been some confusing signals, but he clarified that as he began to tackle projects, he found himself questioning the reasons for his actions. He stated emphatically, “I wouldn’t pursue a relationship with her at this point in time.
Either way, Meri’s friends were thrilled when she finally pulled the plug in early 2023.
She admitted, “They told me something like, ‘We’re here for you, we’re on your side. And it’s high time,'” she confessed. Removing her blinders, she now believes that he had been subtly encouraging her to leave for years by repeatedly asserting he didn’t love her, “Because if I walk away at his nudge, he isn’t the villain because he didn’t depart himself.
Several years following their acquisition of a 14-acre property in Flagstaff, Ariz., intended for construction, Kody expressed during the season premiere that he was prepared to let the dream fade away. Since they hadn’t paid off the entire $820,000 cost (reportedly settled in 2023), he suggested to his remaining wife, Robyn Brown, “I’d almost prefer to abandon it or sell it and then rebuild anew elsewhere.
As for Robyn, “I can’t talk about that,” she responded. “That is so not where I’m at.”
Earlier on, Janelle Brown shared with TopMob News that they were gradually drifting apart. However, it was Kody’s shortcomings in his parental role towards some of their children that eventually led her to decide to part ways.
In simpler terms, the mom told Logan Brown, Madison Brown Brush, Hunter Brown, Garrison Brown, Gabriel Brown, and Savanah Brown that a major turning point for her was when his relationship with her children deteriorated to the point where it appeared he wasn’t making an effort to mend it. She added that this realization made her understand that this was what had been keeping her in the situation.
Even when Kody broached the idea of reconciling in the Nov. 3 episode, it was a non-negotiable for Janelle.
She stated that it’s impossible for her to make peace with him in a way that doesn’t involve his relationship with her children. Her decision, however, is clear: she will always prioritize her children.
The reason Kody didn’t put more effort into repairing the strained relationships with some of his grown-up kids, was what he shared as an explanation.
He expressed his feelings in the September 15 episode, stating he no longer feels part of the family. Despite being legally married to Robyn and co-parenting their five children – Dayton Brown, Aurora Brown, Breanna Brown, Solomon Brown, and Ariella Brown – he also maintains some relationships with other children, though these are infrequent. This leaves him wondering how to navigate this complex situation as it doesn’t feel like a traditional family unit.
In the season 19 premiere, Robyn admitted that despite their first genuine monogamous phase in their 14-year marriage, they were experiencing the most strife. “Things have been challenging between us,” she said. “Kody’s unsure whether to blame himself or one of the other wives. He feels rejected and I think he suspects that I might reject him too.
Consequently, she disclosed, “I’m always alert. I’m constantly checking to ensure he isn’t undermining our relationship.” In her own words, she concluded: “The most challenging aspect is the lack of guidance when it comes to being married to a man who’s undergoing multiple divorces.
Meanwhile, Kody was grappling with a loss of self-confidence, admitting, “I find it hard to tell my reflection, ‘Hi there, pal. I adore you.’
In my perspective as a lifestyle guide, I’ve found myself grappling with the transition of my ex-sister wives into their fresh chapter. As I observed them flourishing, I couldn’t help but remark in the Oct. 27 episode: “They’re all advancing, while I seem to be stuck in the past.” It’s a bit like watching everyone else board the train and realizing I’m still waiting on the platform.
It was shared during the premiere that Madison, Janelle’s eldest daughter, is currently not in contact with her father Kody. As Janelle stated, “Maddie hasn’t spoken to her dad,” and neither has there been any contact initiated between them. Consequently, Madison does not have a relationship with Kody or his wife Robin at this time. She appears to have cut ties with both of them.
Janelle pointed out that the matter at hand is about Kody not fully engaging in a relationship with Maddie’s children, Axel, Evangalynn, and Josephine. She expressed that he should only have contact if he can fully commit to it.
Consequently, during the Sept. 22 episode, Janelle mentioned that Kody had essentially stopped communicating with Maddie and her husband, Caleb Brush, when the family began to disintegrate significantly.
Without Kody being present or reaching out, Maddie has taken on a very protective role, as stated by Janelle. She feels that until he becomes more reliable and less prone to drama, it might be best for everyone if they keep his presence unacknowledged.
Furthermore, Robyn mentioned that she’s been urging Kody to make amends, and she added, “It seems only fitting for the children to do the same as well.
Currently, it seems like Kody isn’t quite prepared to mend the divide, expressing frustration that each conversation with my daughter felt like fishing for gossip, and honestly, I grew weary of it.
During their 32nd anniversary celebration, Meri confided in her friend Brandi that “He hinted at not loving me and feeling as though he was obligated to marry me,” she revealed. When confronted, Meri told him, “‘Kody,’ I said, ‘I know you cared for me.’
And if he didn’t, the mom to Leon Brown said in a confessional, why did he ever propose?
“When a young man meets a woman who catches his eye, why would he decide to marry her and insist that he will grow to love her if he doesn’t feel that way initially?” It seems unfair, right? To select someone from the crowd and declare, “I’ve chosen you, let’s try to make ourselves fall in love for the next three decades”? That sounds harsh and unromantic. Love isn’t something that can be forced or coerced; it grows organically over time with understanding, patience, and mutual respect.
In my personal reflection, I find myself responding to some claims made by Meri. Regardless of what she says, I choose to remain silent and not engage in a public discussion about the matter.
Though, he would share that they never enjoyed a honeymoon period.
On the October 20th episode, he firmly stated that the marriage was in trouble from the start, “It wasn’t a smooth sailing for us the entire time,” he said. “And why do I know this? Because I had a more harmonious bond with Janelle, Christine, and Robyn.
He acknowledged that he “should have ended the relationship two and a half decades back,” yet he continued due to fear, remarking, “Authority figures would never permit another marriage if you’re repeatedly leaving spouses.
Despite being uncertain about whether to develop Coyote Pass or just sell it, Janelle realized that the first move was to settle the Arizona property’s debt. With Kody not open to discussing the matter, she admitted to ex-sister wife Christine Brown in the Sept. 22 episode that “I think I might need a lawyer.” She explained this was probably the only way she could possibly get any kind of decision out of him.
In simpler terms, Janelle admitted that since she and Kody aren’t legally married, she doesn’t have any rights to claim his property whatsoever. In her own words, “It isn’t as easy as calling a lawyer to get a divorce when there’s no legal marriage in the first place. It’s much more complex.
Kody’s reason for avoiding conversations with Janelle regarding the Arizona property is because he now lacks trust in her.
He emphasized during the September 22 broadcast that he would settle the property matters when necessary, and he refused to share specifics about his actions as he was weary of leaked information becoming fodder for the rumor mill within our fractured family.
A bit of a pot calling the kettle black, Janelle said in her own interview.
She mentioned, “He spills secrets as if he’s got holes in him, and I couldn’t help but feel like some things should have stayed private between him and his partners.
In days gone by, when their love was growing instead of waning, they would collectively save their earnings in a common fund.
Janelle put it this way in the September 22nd show: “We would pool all our resources to aid one individual, and then we’d all unite to back the other. That had been the norm until roughly the last decade. Suddenly, however, it seems to be more about personal wealth and everyone wanting their own.
When Robyn required a house in Arizona, everyone contributed towards purchasing her spacious five-bedroom property, valued at $1.65 million – a property that went on sale in August.
Initially, Robyn expressed that the property would serve as a beneficial addition to the family. However, when Janelle proposed that they all share the mortgage, she encountered resistance. Kody responded by saying, “No, no, we have to safeguard, you understand, protect Robyn’s inheritance,” as Janelle remembered. Now that she’s leaving the family, according to Janelle, she wants her share of the Coyote Pass earnings and hopes to recover some of the money she invested into Robyn’s house.
But that could be a tough sell.
In Robyn’s words, she expressed, “We’ve been collaborating for such a lengthy period,” she pointed out. And as Janelle mentioned she was due money from them, Robyn expressed her bafflement, saying, “It’s just, how do you quantify? How do you determine that? It’s all so puzzling.
Janelle expressed her frustration over the family’s struggle to repay Coyote Pass, stating that Kody mentioned having numerous other financial obligations. However, she has observed him acquiring various assets such as trailers and home decorations. “I notice all the artwork on Robyn and Kody’s walls,” she said. “I see all these things. And I understand, as I too have spent money on similar items.” In response, Kody explained that a significant portion of his funds were used for purchasing vehicles (he referred to them as having a fleet) and insurance for the children.
Janelle expressed that she had often been amazed by the fact that Robyn’s backyard was always well-maintained and filled with various items. She would often think to herself, “Wow, really? Huh.” This was because she wasn’t certain about how Kody and Robyn managed their finances.
Essentially, she expressed that he didn’t focus on her needs or desires, which over time became a significant problem for her. As her children grew increasingly frustrated with this situation, she found herself saying things like, “Why, Mom?” or “What’s going on here, Mom?
Robyn’s perspective, nevertheless, leaned towards being cautious with her finances following the dissolution of her first marriage.
She admitted on the Sept. 22 episode, “I wasn’t so good with handling finances in the past.” Growing up, she encountered tough times, and it was her divorce that taught her the importance of budgeting wisely. Speaking about her fellow sister wives, she commented, “Perhaps your spending priorities differed from mine.
Currently, as revealed on the Sept. 22 episode, Janelle admitted that while she frequently gathers with Christine (mother of Aspyn Brown, Mykelti Brown Padron, Paedon Brown, Gwendlyn Brown, Ysabel Brown, and Truely Brown) and their families, there is little to no interaction taking place between them and Meri, Robyn, or Kody. She doesn’t anticipate this situation improving significantly in the near future.
Speaking fondly about their period living on a cul-de-sac in Las Vegas with four houses, Kody reminisced, “It was the best phase of my life. Everything ran smoothly, and it was wonderful having Maddie and Caleb nearby. I truly cherished Caleb; he felt like family to me.
However, in Arizona, disagreements arose concerning coronavirus safety measures, leading to a breakdown of situations. In turn, as his marriages crumbled, he observed that his connections with the children deteriorated too, stating, “This simply led all our relationships to become bitter.
But Christine insisted their were issues well before she announced she was leaving in late 2021.
She stated during the September 22 episode, “The children who felt frustrated had been feeling that way long before I departed. My departure did not affect their relationship with him. Kody has the ability to mend his relationships with his kids.
Though it’ll definitely take some work.
As a person who has been deeply hurt, I can’t move past the way I’ve been portrayed because I’m not prepared to shoulder blame for actions that my spouse or ex-spouse is accusing me of. I long for the day when the resentment fades and we can find forgiveness and love once more.
At their wedding, which took place when Kody was 21 and Meri 19, both acknowledged they weren’t particularly well-acquainted with each other, spiritually or legally. Over time, they decided to file for divorce in 2014 so that Kody could legally adopt Robyn’s older children from her previous marriage.
In our marriage, she seemed quite different from the start, and I believe there were some issues she carried from her past that I wasn’t aware of. At first, I thought I could manage it. However, as time went on, everything felt like a struggle because she was often upset with me. I can’t continue to live in a state where she is perpetually angry at me.
Despite his desire for change, he found himself unable to depart from the relationship due to its unique nature as a plural marriage. Kody explained, “If one wishes to remain faithful and adhere to our faith, they cannot seek a divorce; it’s prohibited. Consequently, I was unable to extricate myself from that bond. However, I wasn’t necessarily yearning for an exit. Instead, I sought understanding: could we mend and preserve the relationship?
Consequently, he admitted that Meri believed they could resolve their issues. However, whenever they interacted, Kody stated, “She wasn’t pleasant, she wasn’t entertaining, she wasn’t compassionate, she wasn’t stimulating. I’m trying to engage with her, but I’m growing weary.
In his opinion, it’s understandable that Meri might feel deserted, yet he clarified that he wasn’t the one who forced her out. Instead, it was Christine, Janelle, and Meri themselves who decided for him to depart from our shared residence.
Despite the fact that neither Janelle nor Christine considered it necessary to divorce Kody since their union wasn’t legally recognized, Meri petitioned their church for an official separation – referred to as a ‘release’ – towards the end of 2022.
She clarified during the September 22 episode that all four of us women had entered into a covenant with Kody through our church when we married him. Since it isn’t possible for us to be legally wed to him, we call it a covenant. Now that we aren’t pursuing any further marriages and he doesn’t wish for me, I feel it’s appropriate to end this relationship completely. I don’t want to remain bonded to him eternally if he doesn’t desire me, so it’s time for us to part ways in every sense.
As a die-hard devotee, I must confess, I initially found myself reluctant, unwilling to bow to the leadership of the church elders and their perceived authority.
Kody made it clear that the harm was so severe that reconciliation is no longer an option. “Regardless,” he added, “I don’t wish to answer to this church and its nonsense when I stand before God. Therefore, I plan to let Meri pursue her own path because if I hold a grudge against her, it would only lead to conflict. frankly, I just want her to move on because it has taken her far too long to accept that our past is behind us.
2021 holiday gift exchange conversation among the 18 Brown offspring took an unpleasant turn, as Christine explained. “Things escalated, things fell apart,” she said. “Kody, Robyn, and their kids were on one side, and they distanced themselves from Janelle, me, and our children. A divide emerged following this text conversation.
According to Robyn, her older children felt that the interaction was not emotionally secure and decided it would be best for them to distance themselves from the relationship. However, she emphasized that this wasn’t a matter of wanting to cut ties completely, saying, “It wasn’t about ‘We never want to see you again, we have no interest in you.’ It was more along the lines of, ‘Hey, things got awkward.’
For his part, Gabriel is hoping that they could find their way back to each other.
“The thing I want most is to just have a relationship with Robyn’s children again,” he confessed in the Oct. 13 episode. “In middle school, Aurora was my favorite person to hang out with. And in high school, I would always try to hit Dayton up. But I’m, I’m not hopeful for a relationship with Dad And Robyn.”
Aurora firmly stated that she was informed on numerous occasions by various individuals, both directly and indirectly, that she was not welcomed as part of the family when her mother married Kody in 2010. They made it clear to her that she was not their sister, and they did not view or regard her in that manner.
Breanna, her sister, expressed that she believed the parents could have made more efforts to foster our familial bond, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
But Christine isn’t sure how they could have opened their arms any wider.
Robyn’s children and Robyn were always invited to all events,” she emphasized. “In simpler terms, I was inviting them to feel free to drop by our home whenever they wished.
At the same time, she mentioned, her daughter Ysabel Brown shared a strong bond with Robyn’s children, and Mykelti Brown Padron lived with them for a while. She explained, “There were challenging periods, and my children felt exasperated at times, but they regarded Robyn’s kids as their siblings just as if they were blood relatives.
Janelle expressed her enthusiasm for plural marriage by stating, ‘When it works well, you’re part of this extraordinary family structure, connected to a community that supports you. You have a husband and share a wonderful relationship with him, yet you retain your independence too. To me, plural marriage is an exceptional setup.’
Kody, however, wouldn’t say “I do” to polygamy again.
In his view on the December 1st episode, he stated that polygamy hinders emotional intimacy. He explained that it creates a sense of defensiveness, and what he desires is an emotionally vulnerable, intimate relationship with a woman. However, such a connection may not be achievable within the context of polygamy.
According to Janelle’s account, Kody found it more challenging to split his affection when the family moved from Las Vegas to Arizona in 2018.
On the September 29th episode, it was noted that when Kody relocated to Flagstaff, he found it simpler to keep his distance. Occasionally, I had to remind him of our arrangement and encourage him to visit my home. He would often claim fatigue as an excuse, but I’d respond, “You can rest just as much at my house as you do at Robyn’s.” In other words, he should take advantage of the opportunity to rest whenever he was with me.
Janelle pointed out that her children were often reprimanded for accessing Robyn’s refrigerator, suggesting a sense of distance they felt towards her. On the other hand, Christine explained that her kids perceived the closeness between Robyn and their father as he was not present in their household.
And Robyn said her crew definitely felt the divide.
On the September 29th episode, she mentioned that Meri welcomed both me and my children warmly, but the rest of the family found it difficult to accept us. She expressed that our desire was simply to become a part of their family.
However, Gabriel might contend that he and his kin made considerable efforts to integrate them into their circle.
In the Oct. 13 episode, he expressed his belief that Robyn might be suffering from a perceived victim mentality. To put it simply, he was suggesting this perspective. It’s not that I hold her accountable for it. Instead, I believe that various individuals develop unique strategies to stay afloat in life.
Yet, he went on to say, “If Robyn genuinely thinks that we were unfairly treating her or her children while she was frequently favored by Dad and we were consistently nurturing our bond with her kids, if she truly believes this, then it’s impossible for me to maintain a relationship with Robyn in the future.
During a September 29 broadcast, Kody himself explained how moving between four households impacted his eighteen children, recalling an instance when Ariella, the youngest of him and Robyn, born in January 2016, held onto his leg as he was about to depart.
Kody put it this way: “‘I have to tell her, ‘There’s another woman who needs me, another mother. I have other children who need to see me,'” he shared. “But she clings to me, crying, ‘Don’t go, Daddy, don’t go.’ It’s tough.
Unfortunately, that’s just a reality of plural marriage, insisted Janelle.
Initially, she clarified, her children were aware that their father wouldn’t be a constant presence. I’ve often felt that Kody and Robyn mishandled the situation with their children. He couldn’t be absent for more than three or four days due to Ari getting so upset. To me, it seemed like an instance of poor parenting. Throughout family history, the other kids have handled similar situations, and they’ve grown up to be well-adjusted adults.
Among a limited number of children from the Brown family, Mykelti maintained relationships with not only Robyn and Kody but also Christine and Janelle. In the midst of Kody’s divorces, Mykelti assumed the role of a mediator or peacekeeper.
Right from the start when Robyn joined the Brown clan, Mykelti graciously asked her to be present during the birth of her twins in November 2022 – Archer and Ace.
During the September 29th episode, Mykelti shared that when Robyn initially became part of our family, I was still trying to understand myself. Robyn made me feel unique and acknowledged, just as she saw me. When I found myself in need, Robyn was there. She was a source of comfort and understanding, someone who listened to me, loved me.
Christine’s motherly joy couldn’t have been greater. As Robyn joined the family and it was evident she shared a wonderful bond with Mykelti, Christine expressed this was exactly what she had dreamed of, she said during the episode on Oct. 6. When I envisioned having a multi-parent household, I longed for my children to establish strong relationships with other mothers, and that’s precisely what I am seeing now.
Kody believes it isn’t just his wives who are excluding him from their lives intentionally as a form of retribution for a crime he didn’t commit. In the October 6 episode, he shared this perspective on his strained relationship with some of his older children, stating that his guilt mainly stems from not being deeply in love with their mothers.
What’s more, he continued, he think his former spouses are a bit to blame.
He stated that the strain in his relationship with his children is primarily due to negative comments about him. Essentially, he feels that the turmoil arising from the family separation has led to a sense of blame towards him because he perceives it as if they are saying, “It’s all Dad’s fault; Dad made mistakes.
However, although he accepts some responsibility for the situation, he strongly objects to the insults. In fact, he admitted difficulties in bonding with Hunter, Maddie, and Gabriel. Notably, one of his children reacted to a text message by stating, “You are worthless. I wouldn’t talk to you again even if I tried.
In another turn of events, I found myself in front of the cameras, expressing my shock with these words, “One of mine has bluntly told me, ‘You’re unforgivable. I’m cutting ties. You’ve manipulated me and indoctrinated me.’ It’s a hard pill to swallow.
He won’t continue to handle the venom, he stated. “I won’t stretch out my hand indefinitely,” he added, expressing his belief that the grown-ups should take more responsibility for resolving issues. “I’m prepared to extend an olive branch,” he continued, “but someone else needs to reciprocate and make some effort as well.
For Robyn, watching Kody’s estrangement from his adult children hit far too close to home.
In her conversation during the October 6 episode, she shared that her parents divorced when she was young. At that time, her biological father lived with another woman in a different city, while her mother lived alone. She recalled asking him about it and all he offered were weak explanations for his absence during her childhood, which left her feeling disappointed.
Instead of letting Kody’s wounded emotions hinder his attempts, it seemed she wasn’t going to let that be the case. During their heated confrontation, captured for television in late 2022, she expressed some concern, saying “I’m finding it tough not to question my respect for you a bit.
Kody admitted that he knows he should put more effort into fixing his relationships with his children. However, he emphasized that healing his own heart is a priority before anything else.
In a recent statement, he admitted to feeling betrayed by some of his children, explaining, “I’m so enraged about the situation that when I speak with them, I fear they might accuse me further, which could set me off and worsen things. At this moment, I’m too emotional and may only end up causing more harm.
Despite most of the family being present at Logan’s wedding to Michelle Petty in October 2022, there seemed to be little affection or warmth among them.
In the October 6th episode, Kody expressed frustration to Robyn, saying he felt Madison hurriedly left him with their kids without informing him about her pregnancy. Specifically, he mentioned that he had only recently learned about the birth of his granddaughter Josephine, who arrived in February 2023, as she hadn’t shared the news earlier. “She didn’t tell me she was expecting,” Kody added.
Frankly, Maddie doesn’t tell her dad much of anything with the two rarely speaking.
Janelle clarified that her daughter Maddie has no connection with Kody because she is extremely careful about her children. In fact, Kody hasn’t been around since Evie was born nearly four years ago, and Maddie didn’t want him to suddenly show up at the wedding as if he were their grandfather, leaving them confused and questioning who he was.
Kody feels it’s unreasonable to expect grandparents to always be involved in their grandchildren’s lives, considering the distance when families relocate to opposite coasts, such as Maddie’s situation in North Carolina. Given his commitments in Flagstaff, he has work and personal responsibilities that keep him busy.
It seems that despite the divergent perspectives between Kody and his grown-up kids regarding their prolonged estrangement, a key disagreement arises over him seeking an apology or admittance of wrongdoing from them.
Following the end of the COVID-19 crisis, we returned to our regular routines, but there was still a rift within our family that we couldn’t mend, according to Janelle. She explained in the October 13 episode that Kody felt her sons needed to apologize to both him and Robyn, particularly to Robyn. This issue evolved over time, and eventually, it seemed like they just needed to have a conversation with her.
In summary, Janelle expressed her concern about Kody feeling that his children had not been loyal to him because, in her words, “The most cherished individual in our family, who has given so much of herself, has been disregarded or treated unfairly – it’s just unacceptable.” However, she responded casually with, “Well, Kody, whatever you say. Yeah, whatever.
Gabriel expressed a similar viewpoint, recalling his discussion with his father. “He seemed to be implying that I should offer an apology,” he told Janelle. “After a while, I responded, ‘Unless you’re genuinely prepared to rebuild our relationship and make amends, we won’t speak anymore.’ A few days later, he contacted me again via text, saying something like, ‘I’ve been thinking about your words. I forgive you. Please forgive me.’ My response was, ‘Forgive me for what?’
Among the six children Kody has with Janelle, it’s just Savanah that he regularly interacts with. Although it doesn’t happen often, about every two months or so, he will reach out and they’ll spend time together, as Janelle explained in the October 13 episode. The rest of their children don’t maintain much contact with him.
Regarding Savannah, who completed high school in 2023, she considers her four elder brothers as having assumed a paternal role in her life. Already, she has shared with Janelle her intention of enlisting her siblings to escort her during her wedding ceremony someday.
Janelle shared that she had discussed the matter with Savanah, and Savanah said something like, ‘Here’s the thing: I’ve come to understand that this is just who he is.’ She explained that he would be the type of father who would join us for fun times but then depart. Janellie went on to say, ‘I can accept him as he is. It’s alright.’
Janelle, however, is less forgiving.
She expressed her deep frustration towards Kody, saying, “I’ve had enough of this! You see, I’ve witnessed this pattern before with many women I’ve worked with. After they divorce, the fathers often disappear from their children’s lives.
At the initial stages of their disagreement, “Gabriel found it particularly tough as Kody often invited Gabriel along on his work trips,” explained Janelle, implying that Kody had been a very hands-on father until recently.
During the October 13 episode, Gabriel was puzzled about what might have upset his father, but he asserted, “I told Dad that if he doesn’t alter and can’t accept responsibility, then I simply won’t visit him anymore. And I’m completely content with that decision.
In her own words, she expressed that he finds comfort in the fact that his father isn’t part of his life, and it’s a sentiment I wish for all my children as well. I believe they are gradually understanding this.
For his part, Kody also seems resigned to the situation.
He expressed his apologies for how Gabriel seems, adding that he has attempted to reach out to him several times but unfortunately, those efforts were not reciprocated. This was not due to any lack of effort on his part.
In late 2022, Meri was the one who ended her relationship with Kody, after formally severing their bond within their faith, which they refer to as a release, due to allegations of abandonment.
She pointed out during the October 13 broadcast that he dislikes that particular word since it does not align with his perception of not having left her. Instead, she feels that he did.
To put it another way, she believes he paid little attention to her until she chose to depart, which allowed him to claim innocence by saying “I have no involvement in this.
And Kody didn’t totally deny that he had a bit of a strategy.
I’d left that chapter far behind me, I admitted in a private moment. To put it frankly, I was apprehensive about her response if I suddenly ended things.
